What's interesting to me is that in both situations where Reze lost, she was never overpowered but instead outsmarted. She was caught off-guard by Denji using chains and she was caught off-guard by Makima posing as a distraction so Angel could kill her from afar.
Strategy and foresight is what she lacked. This implies that the people who experimented on her only trained her to fight offensively— not to protect herself — because they didn't care about her well-being or survival as long as she completes her missions. This was already obvious but the way her upbringing (and how disposable they viewed her) can be seen even in her combat style is very sad.
There is a contrast between her and Denji here. In this arc, Denji won because of what his companions taught him. Reze taught him how to swim, Angel suggested the chains, Beam provided intel about her (and also acted as support). And of course Aki was there trying to protect him. Reze didn't have anyone looking out for her like that. Her handlers only trained her to brute-force every obstacle and if she doesn't manage to, is expected to just die.
Who's the real fan? Makima vs. Beam
"Ah yes. Us. Our roommate. And his 15 ft long shark."
ㅤ reacting to your scars . . .
AKI
figures it out almost immediately, he's been observing you from the beginning.
easy to tell, nothing escapes him most of the time really- understands it first before gently asking about it when the mood is right.
"i'm here if you need to talk about anything."
rooftop smokes and deep conservations with this man is considered free therapy
tries to comfort you and shares equal trauma to lessen the feeling of you being alone
DENJI
tries to understand it at first (nodding and thinking about it before saying anything)
he tries to touch them (consent granted of course) and surprisingly likes how it feels beneath his fingers
"Wanna see mine?" [OR] "These make ya look badass!"
comforts you in his own way and smiles at you to keep going despite being in constant turmoil/pain (he can relate after all)
POWER
she doesn't get it at first, thinks it's something humans do for "fun"
later on though, she learns that it isn't good to make fun of something like that, so she apologizes
cheers you up with silly jokes and moves, involves you with the others and brings you out to participate in her shenanigans
after finding out, she would include you a lot in things (only if you're ok with it)
"Don't mind them! 'Tis a reminder of your courage!"
REZE
finds it pretty lol
"You are stronger than you think.."
Beam doodle 🦈 cause he's adorable and really was the goat all throughout the movie (YES, I know.)
