A few weeks back I had the pleasure of photographing Jacob Arabo aka “Jacob The Jeweler” at his store on 57th Street for Haute Time. I grew up in Switzerland and have had a casual interest in watches as long as I can remember. I’m no expert but I’ve seen a thing or two when it comes to watches. However, I have never seen anything like what Jacob & Co are making. I was truly blown away by the vision and imagination to come up with such designs and then the one of a kind intricate engineering it must take to actually build them so they work. See the video at the end of this sequence (not shot by me) for some closeups of the Bugatti Chiron watch with a working V16 engine inside. Just one example. Jacob couldn’t have been more relaxed and accommodating. True to form as the jeweler to the hip hop stars, we had to pause the shoot when Busta Rhymes came into the store to chat and get a couple watches cleaned before the weekend. The Original Timepiece

When Jacob Arabo was thirteen, his father gave him a watch whose face was a map of the world. While at the time, Jacob viewed the watch as a thoughtful gift and valued treasure, the significance of the piece began to take on a new depth as his career evolved. 

As a child, Jacob’s parents instilled in him the value of hard work and determination. Throughout his youth in Uzbekistan, Jacob undertook summer jobs, formatively as a photographer’s assistant, a watchmaker and a jeweler.  When his family immigrated to the U.S., Jacob subsequently sought out work in a jewelry factory to lend his support. Working in the factory at just sixteen-years-old, Jacob began to understand the intricacy of watch making and jewelry design as well as the dedication required to master the crafts.

Jacob held onto his first watch as he built his business. It recorded every moment of his journey, taking on new depth of meaning, and reminding him of the values instilled in his youth. As Jacob grew as a watchmaker, image of the world engraved on this original timepiece reflected the evolution of his career. Creating works that catered to a jet-setting clientele, Jacob Arabo’s iconic Five-Time-Zone, “The World is Yours,” and SF 24 collections, along with many of his creations, perpetuated this image of the world he carried with him, and served as building blocks to his own global acclaim.

Although he is now a renowned watchmaker, having creating some of the most celebrated and complicated watches in the world, Jacob is still drawn to wear the watch his father gave him. The watch is a token of the things he holds dear, reminding him of the value of time, of the importance of family and of his origins. It symbolizes his growth as a watchmaker, having seemingly predicted his success with his worldly innovations. Jacob notes that watches and jewelry have the ability “to express with greater clarity more than one might with their own words,” a power his first watch emanates profoundly.
