16th April 1746. Date of the Battle of Culloden, the last battle fought on British soil, and the end of the Jacobite rising in 1745. The battle was the last attempt to place a Catholic Stuart monarch back upon the throne. The aftermath of the battle saw the destruction of the highland way of life, and also a subsequent crackdown instigated by the Duke of Cumberland, earning him the title ‘the butcher of Cumberland’. In the same year, an act of parliament was passed outlawing the wearing of tartan, and highland dress.
