A jury on Thursday convicted Keith Smith of all counts in the 2018 murder of his wife, Jacquelyn.
So do you all remember when the murder of a woman from Baltimore, Jacquelyn Smith, when her murder was blamed on a panhandler after she gave him money? And Oprah tweeted out the story and said she would think twice about giving out money to panhandlers again after this, and nationwide donations to panhandlers began to drop?
Yeah well her husband was just convicted of her murder
Jacquelyn Smith (pictured left) was brutally murdered on the evening of December 1st, 2018. The 54 year-old woman went out that night to an American Legion club in Baltimore, Maryland. She was accompanied by her husband, 52 year-old Keith Smith (top right), and her stepdaughter, 28 year-old Valeria ‘Shavon’ Smith (bottom right). The group was out that night to celebrate Shavon’s 28th birthday. On their way home that evening, Keith told police that they saw a woman holding a sign that said “please help feed me and my baby.” By Keith’s account, Jacquelyn rolled down her window to give the woman some money, but as she did so, another man approached the car and reached for Jacquelyn’s wallet. Keith told police that a struggle between Jacquelyn and the man ensued, that resulted in Jacquelyn being stabbed in the torso. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.
Keith told police that the man who stabbed Jacquelyn fled the scene before he could be caught. Police were initially looking for this man, however throughout their investigation, they realized that this man actually did not exist at all. At this point, police shifted their investigation to the last known people to have seen Jacquelyn before she was stabbed: her husband Keith, and her stepdaughter, Shavon.
In late February 2019, investigators received word that Keith and Shavon were planning to cross the border into Mexico. Before they were able to leave the country, authorities tracked them down in Texas. Keith and Shavon were subsequently arrested on March 3rd, 2019. Keith and Shavon are now both being charged with murdering Jacquelyn. Police have not released any details on what ultimately led them to suspect Keith and Shavon, nor have they revealed why they think Jacquelyn was killed. More details are likely to come soon.
Both Keith and Shavon remain behind bars as their cases are pending.

The husband and stepdaughter of the woman who was killed in an East Baltimore stabbing in December — after her husband said she gave money
The husband and stepdaughter of the woman who was killed in an East Baltimore stabbing in December — after her husband said she gave money out of their car window to a panhandler — have been arrested in her death, police said Sunday.
Earlier in the day, Keith Smith, 52, and Valeria Smith, 28, were arrested by Texas state police in Harlingen, near the Mexican boarder while trying to flee the country, acting Baltimore police Commissioner Michael Harrison said. Warrants charging them with first-degree murder were issued Sunday, Harrison said.
Jacquelyn Smith, 54, an electrical engineer at Aberdeen Proving Ground, was stabbed to death at North Valley and East Chase streets about 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 1, according to police.
Her husband, Keith Smith, and his daughter appeared at a tearful news conference at the scene, just days after the stabbing, blaming it on a man who had approached after she had reached out the window to hand money to a woman allegedly begging in the rain. They said the man had come up to the car under the guise of thanking Jacquelyn Smith for her generosity, then reached into the car and snatched her necklace and pocketbook, stabbing her in the process.
Keith Smith, 52, is the husband of the 54-year old Harford County woman Jacquelyn Smith who died after being stabbed in Baltimore. He talks about the night his wife was killed after giving money to a panhandler.
Several members of Jacquelyn Smith’s family had questioned the story from the beginning, her brother Marcel Trisvan, of Havre de Grace, said.
“I already know it’s Keith,” he said. Trisvan said police have provided no information to the family, but that detectives had increasingly been asking the family about his sister’s relationship with her husband.
“All the questioning has been specific to Keith. That kind of sums it right there,” he said. “It never made sense. I told [detectives] from the very beginning there are no suspects out there.”
Trisvan said Keith Smith moved out of his sister’s Aberdeen house two weeks ago, and he handed the keys over to Trisvan, and he told the family he was moving to Florida. Trisvan said his sister owned the home.
He said Keith Smith removed all the appliances from the home.
The case drew national attention, causing some — including Oprah Winfrey — to express concern about giving money to panhandlers in the future. In the days after Smith’s killing, some of Baltimore’s homeless citizens said they noticed a decrease in the number of people willing to roll down their windows and help.
“This case, like all of these cases, certainly is a terrible tragedy. Jacquelyn Smith is an innocent victim so I hope you keep her in your thoughts and in your prayers,” Harrison said.
He credited the arrest to “outstanding detective work involved from the beginning.”
Mayor Catherine Pugh criticized the killing and cover-up.
“Like everyone in our city, state and across this nation, we mourned the senseless killing of Jacquelyn Smith. To now learn that family members staged this brutal killing is beyond belief and represents a double tragedy,” Pugh said in a statement Sunday. “They were responsible for taking Jacquelyn's life with unconscionable cruelty and contrived to do so in our city under the guise of random violence, exploiting the legitimate fears of our residents.”

The homeless and panhandling have been suffering even more since Smith's murder. Donations have gone down drastically not only in Baltimore and DC but nationwide after Oprah carelessly tweeted she'd think twice about giving out money in the wake of it all, only now we're finding out this poor woman was betrayed by her supposed loved ones and the panhandlers were just scapegoated.
