In 1963, everyone got to see the future of the Song Contest. Naturally nobody recognised it, and the jury left Raymond at the bottom half of the table.

Listening to 'Waarom', this Belgian entry feels like the grandfather of a number of songs to come later in the Contest. All the ingredients that will be show up again and again are on display here, but not quite fully formed

It would be fair to say that Raymond is singing almost all the right notes, in almost the right order. He has the Las Vegas lounge room crooner going on, he has the bombastic ballad in the mix, and there are hints of the swagger that will drive characters like Sakis Rouvais fighting to get through the strait-laced presentation.

It needs a few iterations, but this is a fascinating early listen  to a style that will show up again and again at our Contest.
