Coming Home
Whenever I return to Jamaica I am always struck by how not Jamaican I am. In America I often feel the opposite. I’m Black, but I don't always feel African America. But thats a debate for later.
Anyway, here, I stick out like a sore thumb. My patois sounds weird, I can't understand people if they speak too fast. It took me forever to figure out what random sales people meant when they would say “are you getting on” and there was nothing to get on to.
To get around my foreign accent I typically try not to speak when I’m out and about. I kind of just grunt and point at things. It’s been working out pretty well so far. People probably think I’m mad, but at least they don't think I’m American, so I don't have to pay jacked prices. Winning!
