Something about the way Nandor first mentions Jahan when he thinks he's about to die, in the context of a deep regret he has. "I wish I had been better to him."

Only later do we find out that Nandor's bond with Jahan was a truly deep bond that transcended death, that this regret was one that haunted his human spirit. Because when it came down to Nandor or Jahan, Nandor chose to sacrifice his friend to save himself.

But what else happens in that episode where Jahan is first mentioned?

Someone steps up to die for Nandor. Someone he is skittish about calling a friend. And what does Nandor do?

He refuses to let it happen. He steps up and puts his own life on the line instead...to save Guillermo, who is about to be killed in his stead.

Even at that point in their relationship, when Nandor often dismissed Guillermo and treated him like a nuisance...he had already grown so much. And he was already so attached to Guillermo that he did for him what he couldn't do for a bond which was so significant that it transcended death, and his failure of it was one of his deepest regrets.
