whenever this happens I wonder whether the exact same comment Emma throws at Regina could be said about herself or informs how Emma feels about herself. If I'm feeling generous abt the writing, the venom sounds like it's directed at them both?
i don't know. i think if later conversations hadn't happened, with david saying stuff like "don't let regina get to you" and all, i wouldn't feel that way. like, if he had just asked what was going on with emma because acting like that wasn't like her, it would have made so much more sense, allowed for father-daughter bonding, and would have clarified that regina wasn't the problem there, but rather how emma was feeling about herself.

i can't take her .. attitude? the way she talks to regina, it's awful. her 'apologies', her need to make it right has no compassion in it. her new 'understanding' is all self-involved. part of it feels like jen's performance? idk bothering me too
yup. i'll be honest, jen is not really my fave (i know, i know, she's talented but she can really rub me the wrong way) so that sometimes has an impact on how i feel about emma, especially now that emma feels so lacking in substance. but everything about emma's attitude towards regina has gotten progressively worse ever since the end of 3A. like, it wasn't great at all times, but that condescension wasn't really there like it is now.
of course, i've been bothered by the entire conversation surrounding this season about "emma working to keep regina good" so i think it's definitely down to the writing. and partially jen's performance. i don't know. you want to expand your thoughts?

the whole show is starting to 'rub the wrong way' with a lot of their interactions
well, yeah, that's not something new, but i finally took a step back and realized how little of their interactions i actually enjoyed watching. like, 3A was probably the best it ever was and even that had its problems. (remember it being implied that the only reason panry wanted to go home with regina was because something was wrong with henry? remember how emma just assumed henry was going home with her? remember how the show proved her right? remember how she called regina a monster?)

Like, they had Regina do the tiny 'make them... ask them' in this episode, and it was so great because she's struggling! She's trying! Why can't Emma have that?
well, because emma is presumed "good" so all of her actions are right, especially when they're directed towards someone "evil" like regina.

Yeah, pretty much my entire problem with CS is the narrative endorsement.
well, yeah. captain swan is obviously a real problem, but i was trying to focus on the dynamics of regina and emma and how they're written and the problems inherent in that.

I'm so grossed out. Between this and Hook, I don't even know anymore.
well, i know that this is not the show i signed up for, i don't recognize emma at all at this point, and the only thing i care about it anymore is regina and henry.

I pretty much only ship Swan Queen for Henry. Otherwise, I'd ship Regina with her badass self.

THIS SO MUCH. Emma is getting harder and harder to like
exactly. she's just stopped making sense and is just...honestly a dull, awful person at this point. i mean, you know that i always think of regina as henry's mom first, but it still bothers me that emma hasn't had a single thought about him in the past two episodes (that i know of). and that conversation between emma and regina just doesn't make SENSE. like, yeah, regina's upset with you, emma, and she has every goddamn right to be, considering that you were about to run off to new york with henry and then meddled with the past and you got really fucking lucky you didn't screw anything major up.

It's hard to take Emma seriously at all anymore, tell alone as a romantic partner, just because she's so...un-Emma like. And yes, people change but--no. Just no.
and the thing is, she doesn't have to be written this way. they could actually write captain swan and make it believable and have left emma exactly as she was. it could have been BRILLIANT. and they could have had an epic love story and i would have bought it because it could have made perfect sense for emma to fall for someone like him.
but i'm having a hard time buying the way emma's acting right now as her trying to be friends with regina. or a co-parent. or respecting her as a human being and not emma's personal punching bag when she feels a little down.
