Red One (2024)
Not since the likes of RIPD has there been a greater rift between the world building that a film pretends it’s making and the actuality of the matter. Whisked away on a whirlwind mission to rescue St Nicholas of Myra after Santa is kidnapped, hacker, layabout dad, and gambler extraordinaire Jack O’Malley finds himself in a world of ELFs and elves, ogres and Christmas witches. Snowmen are caked up to a disturbing degree, and Krampus presides over a Star Wars cantina of ghoulies and goblins where the national sport is face-slapping. MONA keeps tabs on all of it. But it all sucks. There’s precious little wonder and magic to be had here, a boring and lifeless fantasy world that Dwayne Johnson seems bored of from the start (when he bothered to show up at all, that is). Chris Evans tries his best to keep things afloat, but it’s really JK Simmons who’s playing 4D chess here: he sleeps through the whole damn movie. My dream paycheck. It’s a Christmas movie about learning how to become a better person, but also about how fucking jacked Santa is. It’s about learning to find the good in imperfect people, about making choices and always trying to improve, but also about Kiernan Shipka trying to decide what accent she wants to use. One thing is clear: the word ‘lads’ should never again be allowed to pass her lips.
The only good that can be said of this film is that the makeup and effects on the creatures in Krampus land were honestly pretty inspired. Nothing felt fake and CGI heavy, and there was a tactile nature to the goat-man with his amber eyes and asymmetrical horns, as well as the various cyclops and harpies that attended his court. Congrats to that team for giving the film more than it deserved. Silver sticker.

Red One has a stun-gun-type weapon that illuminates people's entire bodies when it is used, which occurs only during one early scene of the film. There is some lightning, and there is one instance of a cutting tool sending a shower of sparks.
There are multiple action sequences taking place at extreme heights, some of which involve flight.
Flashing Lights: 4/10. Motion Sickness: 4/10.

'Bad Teacher' - A Wannabe 'Bad Santa'
“Bad Teacher” so desperately wants to be a devious black comedy like “Bad Santa” but for teachers. Depressingly, it doesn’t even come close to reaching such devilishly hilarious heights. Despite some good laughs sprinkled throughout, this movie is a surprising bore with few surprises up its sleeve. You can see things coming long in advance, and the punch line deflates very quickly.
