Jake Sheild's recently stopped by Phuket, Thailand to train with the guys over at Tiger Muay Thai and gave this quick interview about how his training it going. Jake is looking to make another run at the title, this time at middleweight.
I like Jake, his jits is spectacular, he's vegetarian and hangs out with The Diaz brothers but I think its going to be very difficult for him to get a win against the likes of Okami, Philippou, Weidman and of course Anderson. Best of luck to him.
Also + 2 cool points to Roger Huerta for wearing pink shin guards to spar.
Thoughts on UFC 144: Japan
Let me start off by saying it was a great night of fights! Great knockouts and submissions. Stacked card and such an amazing show for the Japanese fans, along with all the people watching around the world.
Anthony Pettis (w) vs. Joe Lauzon - What a knockout that was! Both fighters came out looking good and tonight Pettis showed his improvements with his footwork and striking. People via twitter are saying he deserves a title shot, what do you think?
Jake Sheilds (w) vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama - I wouldn't say it was my favorite fight, but it wasn't the worst. Sheilds pulled out the win tonight in a back and forth fight with Akiyama. It's a shame Akiyama grabbed the cage while Sheilds was trying for the takedown, fight could have been totally different. Glad to see Sheilds back in the winners corner, though.
Mark Hunt (w) vs. Cheick Kongo - WOW! We all know Mark Hunt has amazing power in his hands but even still, I was VERY surprised with that finish. Very fast fight and I'm excited to see where this puts him in the Heavyweight division.
Ryan Bader (w) vs. Rampage Jackson - Pride SLAM! I was hoping for the fight to be a little more entertaining then it was, but all and all it was a good fight. We got to see a beautiful slam by Rampage Jackson, also some good strikes. In the end Bader was working the ground game and racking up the points by doing so. Great fight, good recovery by Bader and again, excited to see where this puts them in the Light Heavyweight division.
Ben Henderson (w) vs. Frankie Edgar - What a fight that was! Amazing title fight, Frankie Edgar showed how tough he really is despite the loss. Frankie rocked by the up kick delivered by Ben Henderson could have really been the turning point for the fight. Edgar had great leg kick catches, along with take downs. Henderson also with good take downs and striking. Ben Henderson was really on his A game tonight and we're left with a new, very talented Lightweight Champion. Joe Rogan asked Edgar is maybe moving down a weight class would be best for him and he replied: "It's to soon to really decide" so we'll have to see where that leaves Frankie Edgar.
Again, awesome night of nights! Japan was given an amazing show and we've got nothing but more great events coming up!
Any fights not posted in my "thoughts" post is because I was busy and or away for parts or the full fight.
UFC 129; Toronto's first UFC even and it was HUGE! Record breaking. George St-Pierre vs Jake Sheilds.
Gotta have respect for him. After a hard loss he's suffering, he came to fight.
