The temperature had dropped while they’d been holed up inside. Jake put a cigarette in his mouth. Lit it.  “Don’t mind, do you?” “Have at it.”  Tom didn’t know what else to say. It was late, but he wasn’t ready for the night to end.

Jake twitched a lot as they ambled along.

Tom wondered why. In the pub, Jake’s tics had all but disappeared—or maybe Tom had just grown used to them—but outside on the street, it was clear Jake struggled. 

After a while, Tom took Jake’s arm.
