Johnny sat on the couch in the living room of the Curtis house watching TV. Mickey Mouse was on and he yearned for someone to be there with him. Darry and Soda and Steve were at work, Dally was out doing who knows what, and everyone else was at school. Johnny sat alone wishing he wasn’t feeling as sick. All he could think about was when everyone got home but that was hours away. He sighed, “I guess all I can do now is sleep.”
He walked upstairs to grab a pillow and blanket from Pony’s room and headed back downstairs.
“Why didn’t I just lay down in Pony’s bed-” He shook his head, too tired to think about it.
Johnny laid down but as soon as he did Dally burst through the door.
“Johnnycake what are you doing? Skipping school for once?” He shook his head.
“Nah I’m just not feeling the best. What are you doing here Dal? I thought you’d be out looking for broads or something.” Dally chuckled
“Nah, I got bored looking. Hey, you wanna go to Dairy Queen?” Johnny nodded.
They loaded into Dally’s truck and drove off. On the road, Johnny started to fall asleep but the road was so bumpy he couldn't stay asleep. Before long Dally slid into a parking spot and hopped out.
"Come on Johnny! There's a sundae I gotta steal inside." He got out slower than usual but Dally didn't notice, or if he did he didn't mind. Once through the glass doors, the colder air made him shiver. Johnny picked a tall table near the corner. It had one wide stool on one side and the other side was pushed against the wall. Dally came back with a big dish full of ice cream and hot fudge and set it down as he slid into the stool. He handed Johnny a spoon as he exclaimed,
"Dig in Kid! It won’t be cold forever!" Dally scooped up giant bites while Johnny only nibbled. Even if he didn't feel well he wanted to have a good time with Dally.
Of course, this was all after the whole murder thing had blown over so they could be out and about without worrying. When they went to save the children in the church, Johnny just barely missed the flaming board. Dally still got out of the hospital before him but everyone was relieved when Johnny survived. It still mentally scars all of them to this day.
Johnny must not have noticed nodding off while thinking about the past because his head sunk down and he couldn’t remember what happened after that.
Dallas was very surprised when he felt a weight on his shoulder. He gave a small but rare smile looking at the smaller boy.
His dark hair framed his peaceful face, his mouth was open just a little bit so he could hear his light snoring.
He was hot. Literally, Dally could feel his temperature through the sleeve of his jean jacket.
"Damn Johnnycake, I should get you home." Dally picked Johnny up bridal style and carried him out of the Dairy Queen. Some of the Socs gave him a weird look but Dally just glared at them.
As he carefully set Johnny in the front seat he seemed to whine a bit. Dally shook his head as if he knew it was Johnny just dreaming and climbed into his truck. Dally sped down the road, partially because he didn’t want Johnny to get sick in his truck but mostly because he was worried (though he wouldn’t admit that anytime soon).
Climbing out of the truck he grabbed Johnny and went inside. Looking around he didn’t see anyone.
“You better not be awake,” Dally said as he pressed a quick kiss to Johnny’s forehead. Dally’s face flamed up as he sped walked into the kitchen to raid the Curtis’ fridge.
Little did the criminal know that Ponyboy was watching. It was at that moment he felt his heart shatter.
He liked Johnny but he knew he couldn’t ask him out. Dally liked Johnny too and anything Dally likes, you back off. Pony also knew Johnny liked Dally so he tried his best to ignore the growing ache in his chest and push Johnny toward Dally. Well at least he was pretty sure he knew.
The thing that confused Pony more, is that he also liked someone else. How could he like tuff and sweet Johnny but also liked the tough crook known as Dally? It didn’t make any sense.
‘Well it doesn’t matter,’ Ponyboy thought, ‘I’m not going to be with either of them anyway so I don’t need to know why.’ A deep sigh escaped his lips, but he couldn’t help it. It seemed hopeless. It took Pony long enough to accept the fact that he liked boys, it doesn’t help that he can’t do anything about it. All that was left was the pain.
He walked over to where the TV was and shut it off. The volume was already quiet so Dally shouldn’t notice. He ran up the stairs so that Dally wouldn’t catch him. Besides, he had homework to do. Pony sat down at his desk and began to work.
Dally came out of the kitchen with a thing of ice cream in one hand and a bowl of soup in the other. One thing about Dally that most don’t know is that Dally is actually a good cook. He just doesn’t want to most of the time.
He set the soup down on the little table in front of the couch as he sat by the arm of the sofa. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes while he thought of everything he and Johnny had been through. He knew it wasn’t life or death, just a fever but he still worried about him. And the more he thought about Johnny, the more his mind started to wander to Pony. Dally just assumed that was because the two were around each other so often though.
“Damn why are feelings so hard?”
