Now this. This is how you apologize. This is a YouTuber apology done right.
First of all, for context, in Caddicarus’ latest video on Disney PS1 games, he made a joke where he used the T-slur. The offensive connotations for that term aren’t quite as well known in the UK as they are in the US, and given the context of the joke, it genuinely does seem like it was done out of ignorance and not out of malicious intent. Anyway, let’s move onto the apology itself.
First thing I want to make a note of here is the language used. Notice how he uses phrases like “I’ve upset a lot of people with a joke...” and “I’m sorry to anyone I upset”, and not “A lot of people were upset with a joke...” and “I’m sorry if you were upset...”. This seems like a small difference of wording, but it clearly shows that he’s fully aware that this was his fault for making the joke in the first place, and not the fault of his audience for finding it offensive.
Secondly, although he explains what his intention was, he also acknowledges that the way he handled it was insensitive, and apologizes for doing so. He’s explaining why he said what he said, but isn’t making excuses for it.
And the fact that he's taking the time to take the video down, re-edit it to remove the joke, re-render it and re-upload it so that he won’t upset anyone else just proves to me that his apology is sincere. He knows he messed up, that he made a mistake, and he’s taking the steps necessary to try to rectify it.
This is how people should respond to controversy.
