It came as a surprise. Completely unexpected from both sides.
The earth was descending into shambles, the Garrison was doing all it could to protect the people, but the Galra were stronger. We were ill prepared, outnumbered, and quickly losing fighters. When they called your flight crew back, you were hesitant to follow orders. You could still see civilians down there and knew the second you flew off, they’d be dead.
“Y/l/n, don’t do what I think you’re about to do.” The voice of your squadron commander growled through the radio. You were notorious for disobeying orders off of emotion, and this time was no different.
As your squad flew back to base as ordered, you stayed back, watching the six of your team as well as holding the enemy off as long as possible so the civilians could get to safety.
“Y/l/n,” A voice spoke through the coms gently, “I know this is hard for you. It’s not easy for any of us, but if you stay out there alone, you’re going to get yourself killed.”
You took a deep breath, gaze never straying from your targets as you shot down as many Galra ships as possible. James Griffin was the biggest thorn in your side to ever exist. But not because of his attitude or anything like that, but because he was one of the only people in the entirety of the Garrison that could actually get you to think things through, and you hated that.
You’d survived most of your life by being independent and reckless, you didn’t fear death and had no self awareness when it came to protecting people. Your fierce loyalty, compassion, and sense of duty were the only reason the Garrison didn’t kick you to the curb a long time ago. You’d spent your whole life doing things your way, and for some reason James Griffin was the only person that got you to listen.
You gritted your teeth, debating just turning your com system off until all the civilians were safe, but you knew you’d get way too much shit if you did that.
“Fuck off Griffin, if I get myself killed, I get myself killed. There’s people down there, I won’t abandon them.”
“Y/l/n, you need to come back, now. That’s an order.” His voice sounded shakey, I couldn’t tell if it was from nerves or holding back anger.
“I don’t take orders from you.” You gritted back. You watched with bated breath as the last of the civilians were making a run for it.
“Y/n, get out of there now!” This time he didn’t sound fed up, he sounded extremely concerned. The use of your first name made you drag your eyes away from the ground and up to where a much larger Galra cruiser was pointing right at you.
Looking back down, you watched as the last civilian got to safety. Taking a deep breath you looked back up to see the cruiser charging for an attack.
“No, Y/n I know that voice. Don’t you dare. Turn around and come back to base, now!”
“Just shut up and listen to me! If I move now, I’ll bring them right to base.”
“James. I won’t put all of you in danger. The civilians got to safety, and so did the rest of my squadron. If I don’t, this is still a day won. Understood?”
There was silence and you knew everyone was watching and listening, their breath caught in their throats. You knew because you’ve been there. You’ve heard your comrades, your friends die. The coms don’t shut off, and you can hear everything in a persons last moments.
“It was an honor to fly with and to work alongside all of you. I’ll be damned if I lead the Galra directly to the front door of the only family I ever had.” Your voice was too shaky for your liking, you hated showing your emotions so blatantly.
“Y/n, don’t do this. Please.”
James Griffin. If anyone could get you to change your mind, it’d be him.
“I signed up knowing one of these missions would be a one-way trip, James. Take care of yourself. Oh and, thanks for being my voice of reason all those years.”
Before anyone could say anything else, you turned off your com system. You couldn’t bear the thought of them hearing your final moment. You also turned off your cameras, and went fully dark, making sure there was no way to track your ship, knowing they’d just send reinforcements if they could.
You weren’t one to just go down without a fight though, and you aimed your ship right at the biggest gun on the Galra cruiser and pressed forward, hoping to get to it and do some damage before your inevitable demise. What you had not anticipated, however, was a giant metal space lion flying in front of you and taking out the very gun you were headed for. You fell back as you noticed four more appear and they all worked together to take out the cruiser.
When one of them appeared in front of you and you saw the familiar face of your old friend Hunk from back when you were cadets at the Garrison, you forgot how to breathe. You waved at him in shock and he waved back, seemingly just as shocked. Pointing to the ground, you watched him nod before maneuvering your ship and heading to the surface.
You were out of your ship, rushing the large yellow space lion and pulling Hunk into a hug faster than one would presume possible.
“Oh my goodness. You’re alive!” You exclaimed. Then you froze and pushed him away before punching his shoulder. “Where the hell did you disappear to?” You couldn’t decide to be overjoyed or royally pissed off, but to be fair, you were just about to preform a suicide mission before they all showed up, your emotions were allowed to be a bit of a mess.
He nervously rubbed the back of his neck. “I kinda maybe accidentally joined a Legendary Defender of the universe and have been fighting dangerous murderous aliens.” He said in all one breath.
“Dope. Oh my- Pidge?!” And just like that you were sprinting to a green version of the large space lions. You pulled the small one into a tight hug, the both of you laughing and embracing each other.
“It’s been a while Y/n. I can tell you’ve been working out.” Pidge stated, sounding out of breath from how tight you were hugging.
“I can’t believe you’re all alive. I mean, Sam said you were but actually seeing you guys, this is crazy.”
“What were you doing alone this far from the Garrison?” A shorter boy with longish black hair spoke up. You recognized him from your days as a cadet, but couldn’t pin a name to the face for the life of you.
“You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, Y/n. Keith just doesn’t have manners.” Lance said with a smirk as he made his way towards you, pulling you in for a hug himself. You laughed as you hugged him back.
“No, no, it’s okay. I was ensuring some civilians got to safety when my fleet was called back in. I stayed behind to make sure they weren’t tailed or shot down, as well as to make sure the Galra wouldn’t go after the civilians still on the surface. And then the cruiser showed up and I, well, I didn’t want them following me back to the Garrison.”
“They could’ve killed you Y/n/n.”
“Yeah. I know.” You square your shoulders back as you made eye contact with Keith, watching as he fully internalized what you were saying.
“You were running a suicide mission.”
Hunk gasped and Lance shook his head in disbelief, Pidge just kind of went silent, and a girl you hadn’t noticed before or ever seen spoke up.
“Why would you do something like that?”
You shrugged. “I’m impulsive and reckless.” You stated as if it was no big deal. “And now that there's no danger of being followed, I’ll escort you all back to headquarters.”
You made your way to your ship and took off, already knowing they’d all be right behind you. It wasn’t a very long flight, and when the building came into sight you suddenly remembered you were dark and they all thought you were dead.
Quickly turning your com system back on, you patched yourself through to the mainframe.
“Coming in for landing, and I’ve got a few special guests with me.”
“Y/n/n! You’re alive?” James all but shouted through the speaker.
When he didn’t respond immediately you didn’t really think anything of it, but when you landed and climbed out of your little plane and turned to see him sprinting out of the building, you were shocked to say the least.
As he got closer, you noticed the tear streaks staining his face.
You never finished your sentence as he got to you and wrapped you in her arms, pulling you towards him. You didn’t really register what was happening until he was pulling away from you and apologizing profusely, attempting to pull away from you entirely.
You grabbed his shirt and pulled him back down, reconnecting his lips with yours. He calmed down and melted into it, wrapping his arms back around you and pulling you impossibly close to him.
The sound of Lance whistling and Hunk whooping in excitement made you break apart in embarrassment. You blushed as you noticed James still hadn’t opened his eyes, as if he was processing it all, and buried your head into his shoulder.
“Y/l/n,” You looked up at him to find him looking down at you with a mixture of emotions shining in his eyes. “The next time you decide to do something so damn reckless and potentially hazardous to your health, make sure I’m by your side. I- I can’t lose you, Y/n.”
You felt tears well up in your eyes. You had spent your whole life by yourself, you had found your own family but never thought they thought of you as family as well. The realization that the stunt you pulled actually would’ve hurt someone hurt you. You never imagined there was someone waiting for you to come home, you never thought your absence would bring someone heartache, you knew there was no one for you, and you knew you’d rather risk your own life to protect the people you love than put them all at risk. Knowing it was one-sided made it easier.
Attempting to hold back your tears, you pulled James back down for another short kiss. “You actually ready to be stuck with me, Griffin?” You tried to say lightly, but your shaky voice gave you away.
He brushed your hair behind your ear gently. “I’ve been ready. I was just too nervous to tell you.”
You laughed and grinned as you kissed him again.
“I’m sorry for almost never giving you the chance to.”
