Two poems by James Koller
You could see where the wings hit,
the prints they left in the soft snow, & the holes
where the claws thrust deep into the snow,
where the talons caught & held & killed.
He sat for many days on top of the pole,
looked asleep as he sat in the cold gray light,
strange to see, an owl by daylight, & we wondered
what it was he heard, who he waited for.

CHANCE & NECESSITY, AGAIN
Two ravens pick through
the scraps of pork fat scattered
over the yard, even their shadows
black on the bright sunlit snow.
I had hoped the old fox would find
my offerings. For years his tracks
passed to the north of the house. Now
he uses the new road between shed & house.
If I had gone deeper, into
the woods, emptied those scraps
at some greater distance, would these
same two have been first to arrive?
