From the journals of Major General Pierce Mustang, commander of the Amestrian 501st Rifleman Battalion:
Watched a new batch of newbies run the Birdcage today. Normally, it's just a formality since I select the new recruits personally for a reason but this one group is brilliant. The Xu kid especially. Don't think I've ever seen someone outright stand their ground against Xiaoyu, especially not someone who combines that gumption with genuine Alchemical skill. Red and I both marked the whole group down for special assignments. They'll be useful in the future.
Quiet day today. Had a new shipment of munitions come in over at one of the outposts out west. Things over by Creta have been quiet so it's more of a "just in case" restock.
Got word back from a raid on some weird cult guys down south I authorized yesterday, too. No KIAs on our side, thank God, but apparently the cult was worshipping a galactic devourer of some kind and believed that their skill in alchemy made them said devourer's "heralds". I guess it's because we're here to stop applications of alchemy that get too close to what this country was founded for but, man, sometimes I wonder why we get all the weirdos. Still, better them than some of the other groups we've stopped in the past.
Today marks the eleven year anniversary of the day I came out of the ice, four days exactly after the Promised Day, which is also technically my birthday. It's always painful. Every year, I get horrible nightmares. The exact memories of when I came out of the ice are.....blurry but I still remember the nausea, the disorientation, the overwhelming rage. The rage is what I remember most of all. That and the overwhelming stench of blood and gunpowder. Sometimes, I get scared that my life since then has been a drugged up fantasy and I'm still on ice waiting for my activation as puppet ruler.
Mom, Dad, and Lany all called today. Talking to them makes it a bit more bearable. Sometimes, I think I'd go nuts if it's not for all three of them. Haven't spoken with Lany in a while, actually, so it was good to hear from her.
Xiaoyu apparently thought today was my actual birthday and not the day I came out of the ice so she had her sister help bake a cake and had shown up to work dressed in that Clown outfit determined to help me have a good birthday. I didn't have the heart to tell her what today actually was but it was really sweet so I just let her do it. Red tried to stop her because apparently her original plan involved fireworks somehow but he let it slide when she downgraded to simply putting on facepaint and filling my office with balloons. I really do love her.
