I’m sorry but I’m not falling for the Ottawa Senators Heated Rivalry Jersey propaganda.

The Sens are in n the middle of a major scandal. According to unverified sources, several players including Goaltender Linus Ullmark have been cheating on their wife’s and girlfriends, causing a rift in the locker room. While this is only a rumour, it has gained major traction online and is continuing to be discussed in sports circles and news outlets. (Source)

Then out of nowhere they drop these Heated Rivarly jerseys in support of Ottawa Pride Hockey, without even discussing the idea with the charity. (Source) It makes me wonder if they even got Rachel or Jacob or anyone involved with HR to agree to this.

To me, this feels like a fast attempt to get any type of positive press and distract people from criticizing the team, which as my dad says is ironic because “there trying to distract for a sex scandal with a sex heavy show, yeah that’s a good idea.” They’re trying to ride the coattails of this show and present themselves as progressive, yet they are fine signing and platform ing known bigots and bullies such as James Reimer and Brady Tkachuk. Not to mentioned the jerseys are over $300 dollars! The PWHL player jerseys are $50 less and they offer free shipping, which Ottawa’s merch store doesn’t.

Although the net profits are being donated to charity, meaning they’re not directly making money of these jerseys, this is still a clear example of rainbow capitalism in the NHL. Selling Pride jerseys is not a sign of systemic change. This reeks of the NHL’s desperation to bring in new fans in any way possible. They will happily take queer people’s money, but they don’t actually care about us as people.

I will not be buying these jerseys and I encourage others to think twice before purchasing them. If you want to support Ottawa Pride Hockey, you can buy their own merch or make a straight donation. And if you want an Ottawa Heated Rivalry jersey, just wait until season two when the show releases the official Centaurs jerseys.
