"charming and irresistible, yeah, right." james clicked his tongue, cackling. "more like cocky and irritating, if you ask me."

marlene grabbed his pillow and smacked him over the head with it. "tosser."

"correction, your tosser," james accentuated the first word, a malicious smile spreading on his face. "you love me, mckinnon, admit it. it's true. you do love me."

marlene exhaled sharply through her nose, but chuckled. “unfortunately. you can't deny, though," she exclaimed, pinching him, "that you love me too."

"how long is this song, marlene?" james asks, lightly banging his head against the soft material of the armchair.

"six minutes," she answers, mesmerized by the song. james had liked it to, at first, but it was now so played in the gryffindor common room that, to some, it became tiring.

however, it always seemed shorter than it was, because everyone put on a show to forget the stress that school and war brought them and, by the end of the song, everyone was panting and laughing.

"six bloody minutes? that's forever!" he exclaims, straightening his back.

"i pity your future wife if you think six minutes is forever." she cackles, jumping off the couch to run away from james before he would catch her.

marlene and james headcanons

lots, and i mean lots, of play-fighting. they barely get to the gryffindor common room they're already onto each other

marlene kicks james in the shin during class because she thinks she's funny

painting each other's nails

james always has hair ties on him because marlene never brings hers because she always "forgets"

marlene gave james his first and last piercing (nose ring) on the bathroom floor of his dorm. he cried for around five minutes before he looked in the mirror

have stupid nicknames for each other

were neighbors ever since they were babies and the very first moment they saw each other, they latched and never let go

marlene was both a bridesmaid and a groomsmaid (does that word even exist? idc) because james wanted her too

quidditch besties! marlene is one of the only people that can adjust to james' 4, 5, or 6 o'clock training, even more so during the winter, when the sun hasn't risen yet (he appreciates it greatly)

he's the first person marlene had come out to, and it happened in the very same day sirius came out to him. they decided to do it in the same day, and james had been just as enthusiastic for both of them

james borrows marlene's quills and always forgets to give them back (marlene doesn't mind much, since she gets the quills from her brothers. more reasons for her to get newer stuff)

there's a huge nut tree in the potters' back garden that, when they were home for more time, they used to climb all the time

marlene promised james he'd never have to live without her. she broke her promise.

Marlene chuckled at the sync in of the two. She used to be James’ best friend, back when they still lived in Wombourne. She hadn’t been replaced, and she didn’t even feel like she had been. James and Sirius had hit it off the moment they saw each other, despite the different upbringings; however, there was a certain mischievousness that the two of them shared, almost as if it was their secret, and they had latched onto each other ever since.

It takes a great deal of courage to show not just the beautiful, but the ugly and bruised as well. 

Marlene guessed that was what had happened between the two of them. She knew, briefly, what had happened; neither Sirius, nor James talked much about it. Another one of their many secrets, but she didn’t mind. She imagined it, the heaviness of hushed words in the dead of the night.

as the world falls down, chapter three: september the third, 1976

James and Marlene had been friends ever since they were in nappies. They had lived next to each other their whole life, separated all their life by just a grandiose walnut tree, with big, thick branches they could climb to the other’s window. They spent all their time together when they were little, running after each other on the quiet streets of Wombourne, and when they were older too, nights spent on those slides that burned your arse when you tried going down on them, both of them sticky and sweaty, their laughs bouncing off the houses around that stupid little playground behind Marlene’s house.

James was a force of nature, to be reckoned with. When he met Sirius, it was even more obvious. Marlene and James might have been extremely close when they were little, but the relationship between him and Sirius was entirely different. They were attached at the hip, the two golden boys of Hogwarts, always together, never apart. James had been an only child all of his life; and finally, he had a brother.
