Dorothy Dandridge worked with actor James Edwards, who starred as Joe in the screen test for Carmen Jones. Joyce Bryant and Elizabeth Foster also tested for the role of Carmen Jones. Edwards was a very talented actor, and had Carmen Jones been made a few years earlier the role of Joe could have very well been his. Dorothy’s test scene was a sequence with Joe in a shabby Chicago hotel. Carmen and Joe were still at the height of their love affair, and at one point, Carmen, having just polished her toenails, raises her leg in Joe’s direction. Saying the classic line, “Blow on ‘em, sugar. Make ‘em dry faster.” In the scene, Dorothy would have to convey the mood of a highly sexual woman, aware of her sexual power, while casually giving love orders to a man who is almost literally at her feet. The director and producer of the film, Otto Preminger was simply blown away by Dorothy’s amazing performance and said, “It’s the best screen test I’ve ever seen.” On May 26, 1954 it was announced that Dorothy had signed on to star in Otto Preminger’s Carmen Jones.
