For a few moments she’s not sure the words will come. Only the prospect of having to make the journey to his palace again later if she fails now keeps her rooted in place, eventually drags the syllables out of her mouth. “I’m pregnant,” she says.
Ringing silence greets this announcement. She suddenly can’t look at him, instead fixing her gaze on the smooth wooden floor of his bedchamber. It’s been polished to within an inch of its life; its deep, rich color gleams to almost a mirror shine in the waning sun.
“Okay,” he says, eons later. It sounds choked. “Okay.”
