i was actually really happy to go ahead and put four songs together that i think represent nomin pretty well. though...i also have a lot of songs on her playlist, so narrowing that down is... well, it was a bit of a test of me figuring out what would be the best to keep on there.
ultimately, though! i decided on showing songs that were all created or collaborated on by mongolian or siberian artists!
Makhali's character is heavily vibes-based and so a lot of her music is as well - there's no great lyrical analysis to be found here. Hopefully the music is still a bop, though! Happy birthday @sproutoflight!! I hope you have so many new songs to groove to and a wonderful birthday!

Found this song on a whim from a randomly generated youtube playlist (I'm a giant Nami Tamaki fan, she's one of the few artists I have physical CDs of, so that tracks), immediately felt Makhali vibes from it. It's peppy and energetic, like her!
<HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR || HOT LIMIT>
Truth be told I like every version/cover of Hot Limit, but if pressed I'll admit that this is my favorite. As someone raised on Linkin Park, the rock/rap angle is something I'm weak to. This is my prime Makhali fight scene song.

I think this song captures a positive attitude that still has a healthy sense of snark and making your own way in the world. That's just the feeling I get from it. It's a feeling I associate with Makhali.

"Hey. Just because Makhali is Goku-coded doesn't mean you can just slap the opening of DBZ in here and-"
One of the lyric translations is "An empty head is easier to fill with dreams" and the rest of the song is about fightin' and not letting anything get in your way. The song was retroactively made for her. Equally fitting is the Dragonball opening Mystical Adventure, but I figured I couldn't shove both of those in here, so I chose this one.

**Kitoto's papa ran screaming for the hills (metaphorically speaking) when it came time to address the birds and the bees with his precious baby girl. End result? Kitoto to this day still believes her parents grew her in a garden and that she sprouted from a gysahl green. According to her, all lalafells sprout from plants—and the universe itself defies anyone to educate her otherwise. :) :) :)

Yakuza Series - 24 Hour Cinderella
There's no denying that my little blue haired Sea Dog has a little bit of a Mad Dog in her! If you're not familiar with the Yakuza series, Goro Majima is a fan favorite character who is a psychotic yakuza who's kind of a chaos gremlin. It's a bit of fan canon that this song available for him to sing in the series' karaoke minigames is actually his favorite song! When I think of Lulu's gremlin nature, I associate it with this song, It's a poppy idol song about being in love with a princess sung by a goofy killer. I think that fits Lulu pretty well!

Lowlands Away - Sea Shanty
Lulu's tale hasn't been all silliness and goofball antics. Her first love ended tragically with the death of her lover Totopa Topa. That was kind of also the end of Lulu's career as a pirate since she never sailed with another crew after Carteneau. I've always found this shanty to be profoundly tragic, so I associate it with that sad time in Lulu's life.

Can't keep these things serious for too long! So, Lulu's obviously a bit of a horn dog, especially when it comes to Bunzo and G'raha, and I would be lying if I didn't admit a bit of that was inspired by Houshou Marine, Hololive's horniest pirate captain. This song by her is very representative of that desire combined with the kind of humor that I like to mix in with Lulu's baudiness, too!

Shadowbringers and Endwalker were very hard on Riona. She can't say she came out the other side okay exactly. But she did make it and the future looks bright.
To Good Friends in Far Away Times - Chrono Trigger Arrangement
Cheating a little because it's an arrangement of 2 songs from Chrono Trigger buuuut I'm counting it anyway. This arrangement in particular gives the vibe of the transition from the mostly unassuming barmaid with a knack for archery into the Warrior of Light.

Easily the theme of Riona's feelings toward Zenos. ARR Riona never could have stood against him. The first defeat would have sent her running. But by the time Stormblood rolls around, she knows where she was and where she is now. And she knows she can and will get to a point where she can defeat him.
