13.151 Twanky (Part Two)

SKASE: You’re a star, Rodney, my boy.

DEAKIN: Rod! I’m on stage!

A completely over-the-top farce, which is exactly what an episode about a Sun Hill panto should be. Everyone is brilliantly IC, too, from Derek & Jack getting drunk together then arguing on stage, to Rod thinking he’s too cool for the whole thing until he gets cast and decides he’s the next Laurence Olivier.

15.5 The Wrong Horse

HAGEN: You’d better be nice to me, or else I could go in for a little blackmail myself in the future.

Vicky and George go out of town to protect a jockey who’s the star witness in a horse doping trial. Vicky kicks serious arse and George is an incompetent arse. (I seriously thought that woman chasing him was going to turn out to be a sex worker hired to distract him.)

Jamila’s last episode. She got some good episodes in the beginning, but faded into the uniform crowd, and this really wasn’t the goodbye she deserved—just a face at briefing :(

14.119 Puzzled (Part Two)

CARVER: I think I recognise this bloke. BOULTON: Yeah? CARVER: Isn’t he in Snow White?

PROCTOR: You sent us in there. You knew what it was going to be like in there, and you still sent us in there with him. Anything could’ve happened! HOLMES: All right, Tom. It’s over. PROCTOR: Bloody maniac!

Nice juxtaposition here between a quiz between Sun Hill and Barton Street (and all the shenanigans that entails) and John’s efforts to catch two extremely nasty criminals. Rod’s chatting up a barmaid (but Dave and Tony have told her he’s gay), Tom almost gets his head blown off thanks to a hyped-up hippy, and Reg is just happy that he’s raised enough money to fix up his caravan.

14.101 All for One

BROWNLOW: If the public heard more about the way that officers day to day face difficult and sometimes life-threatening situations as you did yesterday, and a little less about the few bad apples who give us all such a bad name, well we might be held in rather higher esteem, hm?

And sometimes the bad apples do good things too.

I do love a good race-against-time episode, and the first part of this one is excellent.

Eddie’s such a great villain because he isn’t one-note. He’s a liar, he’s a manipulator, he’s morally dubious… but he will also risk his life to save a member of the public and be genuinely affected when he can’t. It’s interesting that Sam goes to Tony and George about his doubts—and that they decide to do their own investigation before taking it higher up.

14.97 Making Up

SKASE: What now? DEAKIN: It’s all down to interview technique, I suppose. SKASE: Yeah. DEAKIN: I’d better take the lead, then. SKASE: 😒😒😒

Vicky goes undercover as a drug dealer to catch a dodgy lawyer, but it’s a bit of a comedy of errors in the end. Meanwhile, Tony makes up with the girlfriend of the pedestrian he killed, but only after she tries to run him down with her own car.

14.67 Spray

A topical episode all about the use of capsicum spray. It’s nicely done, showing how the truth of an incident won’t stop the media from turning it into a case of police brutality.

Matt’s such a troll at the end and I’m here for it.

14.66 A People Person

Tosh’s last episode, made much sadder by Kevin Lloyd’s untimely death. I liked Tosh in the beginning, but felt he became less interesting as the seasons went on. He became a bit one-note, almost pathetic at times, not at all the clever detective he was at the start. I’m glad he went out on an episode showing his kindness, for Lloyd’s sake, if not for Tosh’s.
