On 16 January 1969, in response to the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in which the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia to crush the Prague Spring reforms of Alexander Dubček's government, Palach committed self-immolation in Wenceslas Square, suffering burns to 85% of his body.

After the Velvet Revolution, Palach (along with Zajíc) was commemorated in Prague by a bronze cross embedded at the spot where he fell outside the National Museum, as well as the naming of Jan Palach Square in his honour.

V piatok som imatrikuloval a no, taký divný pocit.

Začal som štúdium na farmácii, bol som úplne mimo mojej rodnej obce i krajiny (a ešte furt som), v ten istý deň začali voľby, mal som na sebe typ oblečenia, ktorý normálne nenosím. A potom som kukol na stenu ešte pred tým, ako sme kolektívne išli do veľkej auly v Karolíne a tam pocta Jánovi Palachovi.

A teraz rozmýšľam, či zhorel do tla, ako to ľudské ostatky majú vo zvyku (keďže živočíšny tuk veľmi dobre horí, zapálený človek zhorí ako svieca, pričom nič okolo neho sa ani nemusí poškodiť a dokonca môže zhorieť tak, že ani popol z neho neostane) alebo dačo po ňom ostalo. Bol tam dajaký jak keby odtlačok/forma jeho tváre, ale neviem určiť ako vznikol.

Btw na mieste, kde bola osadená vlajka Československa v tej aule vlajka chýba, lebo tou vlajkou prikryli jeho rakvu na pohrebe. Ak dobre pamätám slová pani prorektorky.

Josef Koudelka made surreptitious photos of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, which were smuggled out of the country. This image from January 1969 is of a public mourning of the death of Jan Palach, a 21-year-old student who set himself on fire in the center of Prague. It is crushing af to see this now in the wake of Aaron Bushnell's own self-immolation, in my country, not far from my house.
