Minimalist composer La Monte Young, who is not related to Brigham Young, was born in this log cabin in the tiny town of Bern, Idaho, founded by cheesemaking Mormon pioneers from Switzerland. In 1979 Dia bought the cabin to turn it into a La Monte Young Historic Site and Birthplace Museum. Which has yet to happen.

tl;dr art museums will not save us, but The NY Historical might.

In addition to Oertel's 1852 painting of New Yorkers pulling down the statue of King George III at Bowling Green on July 9th, 1776, the Historical has also collected fragments of the statue, which monarchist scum in Connecticut saved from being melted into bullets for the Revolution.

update: @artcrimeprof Erin L. Thompson posted another fragment of the George III statue, a hand, which was unearthed in 1991, and sold at auction in 2019 (for $207,000).

TIL Marcus Loew built this theater, the biggest in the whole Loew's chain, on the site of the tenement where he was born. It closed in 1958. [cinematreasures.org]

Cameron Rowland's Estate (2024) documents fifty years of real estate transactions by Dia Art Center and its various art constituents. One property on West 23rd St in Manhattan, was to be a permanent Cy Twombly Museum.

But then Dia imploded, the de Menil family swooped in to take over and stop burning money, and a bunch of properties were disposed of, including the once-future-Cy Twombly Museum. Which got a shitty five floor condo addition in 1988. Sorry not sorry if you live there. I do wish it was a Twombly Museum instead tho

Jasper Johns, who said he dreamed of painting the US flag, and then did, was very interested in his dreams, and wrote poems about them.

There are palm reading illustrations collaged into Johns's early work from a book by Martini the Palmist, who also wrote, What Your Dream Meant:
