Jan Verkade - Self Portrait (ca. 1891-1894)
Paul Sérusier (French, 1864–1927)
"Portrait of Jan Verkade at Beuron", 1903
Jan Verkade (b. Johannes Sixtus Gerhardus “Jan” Verkade, later Fr. Willibrord Verkade, OSB; Dutch, 1868–1946) was a post-impressionist painter, student of Gauguin, and member of the "Nabis". In 1892 he converted to Catholicism, later settling in the Benedictine Abbey of Beuron. He entered the abbey as a novice in 1894 and was ordained a priest in 1904.
Musée départemental Maurice Denis
Last weekend we went to an exhibiton in Casa Milà (La Pedrera) in Barcelona that featured paintings by the Nabis, a french group of painters inpired by Gaugain's expressionism that wanted to paint about the everyday life and its mysticism and symbolism.
The painters featured in this post are, in order: Jan Verkade , Paysage décoratif; Édouard Vuillard, Paysages et interieurs and the ceramic painted dishes; Maurice Denis, Saintes femmes au tombeau. Matin de Pâques; Pierre Bonnard, Portrait de femme.
Also, I found their ideology very sweet and fitting for the current state of the world, so I also added this passage of a letter by Nabi painter Paul Sérusier to his fellow Maurice Denis.
