Les Muses, oil on canvas (1893) Maurice Denis (1870–1943) reimagines classical Greek mythology through a modern lens in this hallmark of the Nabi movement. Set in his hometown, Granville, Manche, a coastal town in the Normandy region of France. The painting replaces the nine deities of art and science with contemporary women, many modeled after his wife, Marthe.

They move through a "sacred wood" of chestnut trees, where vertical trunks contrast with the flowing, Art Nouveau curves and patterns of their gowns. Loc. Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France. Dim. 171 cm H x 137.5 cm W (67 3/8 x 54 1/8 in.).

Jan Verkade (b. Johannes Sixtus Gerhardus “Jan” Verkade, later Fr. Willibrord Verkade, OSB; Dutch, 1868–1946) was a post-impressionist painter, student of Gauguin, and member of the "Nabis". In 1892 he converted to Catholicism, later settling in the Benedictine Abbey of Beuron. He entered the abbey as a novice in 1894 and was ordained a priest in 1904.
