The overhead Christmas-lights are turning his hair a strange shade of red, Nancy notes.

They hang tall, all over the Wheeler living room, as it buzzes with guests. The loud talking, clinking of cutlery and noise from the radio is slightly overwhelming, but everytime she hears Jonathan huff a laugh as he tells random patrons about his experience in New York, or sees him grin shyly, muss at his hair in that way that is just so very Jonathan, the feeling inside her softens.

She tries not to read too much into that, holding onto her second flute of champagne for the evening, as she watches him interact with her family’s guests from across the room. It’s weird, she can’t help but think, that regardless of how long they’ve been apart, her gaze always seems to be drawn to him in a room full of people. It’s just mechanically ingrained in her, perhaps, to seek him out. It’s how it’s always been; from school hallways and funeral homes to alternate dimensions and melting rooms.
