Black History All Year 2020 . . Bolin graduated from Wellesley College in 1928 and earned her law degree from Yale Law School in 1931. Bolin clerked in her father’s law office until she passed the New York bar exam in 1932. She married fellow attorney Ralph E. Mizelle a year later, and together they opened up a practice in New York City. In 1937, Bolin was named Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of New York, serving on the Domestic Relation Court. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia appointed Jane Bolin Judge of the Domestic Relations Court in 1939, where she served for 40 years. During her tenure with two other judges she achieved two major changes: the assignment of probation officers to cases without regard for race or religion, and a requirement that publicly funded private child-care agencies accept children without regard to ethnic background. . . Judge Jane Bolin reluctantly retired in 1979, after reaching mandatory retirement age, and went on to serve on the New York State University Board of Regents, where she reviewed disciplinary cases. Day. 20 - Jane Matilda Bolin Born: April 11, 1908 in Poughkeepsie, New York Died: January 8, 2007 in Queens, New York Highlight: The first African American woman to become a judge in the US, and the first to graduate from Yale Law School. Jane Matilda Bolin was the youngest of four children, born to Gaius C. Bolin and Matilda Ingram Emery. Her father was a lawyer and the first black person to attend Williams College. Bolin adored her father and always wanted to follow in his footsteps of becoming a lawyer. One of two black students in her class at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, a career adviser tried to discourage Bolin from applying to Yale Law School due to her race and gender. This would not deter Bolin though, she would graduate Wellesley in 1928, and enroll at Yale Law School where she was the only black student, and one of only three women. In 1931, Bolin would become the first African American female to receive a law degree from Yale. She would then go on to pass the New York state bar examination in 1932. At the age of 31, in 1939, Bolin was appointed as a judge of the Domestic Relations Court by mayor Fiorello La Guardia, making her the first African American female judge in the US. She remained a judge of the court, renamed the Family Court in 1962, for 40 years, with her appointment being renewed three times, until she was required to retire aged 70. During her tenure, Bolin worked to encourage racially integrated child services, ensuring that probation officers were assigned without regard to race or religion, and publicly funded childcare agencies accepted children without regard to ethnic background. Upon retirement in 1979, Bolin volunteered as a reading instructor in New York City public school for two years and served on the New York State Board of Regents, reviewing disciplinary cases. An activist for children's rights and education, Bolin also served on the boards of the NAACP, the Child Welfare League, and the National Urban League.
