Tell us more about why you like Dufresne? There hasn’t been nearly enough meta about him :)
thank you for indulging my weird, dufresne-loving ass.
i mean, look at this ridiculously out of place yet fully at home nerd! he just wants to keep track of everyone’s money! he’s snotty, but it’s kind of tied into how The Math doesn’t allow time for nonsense. as a chicken who can get very attached to carrying out specific jobs, i can’t help identifying with a pirate who spent several years managing to not get his hands dirty because niche of usefulness. (yeah ripping the dude’s throat out with his teeth was creepy as hell but nobody’s perfect.)
his pov just makes a lot of sense? when randall told the men silver was a thief, it was howell and especially degroot who wanted to kill silver and be done with it. dufresne was the only one who seemed to feel bad about the idea. he was rooting for silver to pass the test they’d come up with and prove that he could be valuable to them. also? billy was good people and dufresne appreciated the hell out of that.
he shot flint, who had probably murdered billy and definitely murdered gates, along with leading them to a place with zero apparent gold, and was actively in the process of starting a prick-measuring orgy of cannonballs and death with a spanish warship that would lead to… most likely nothing good? dufresne had no reason to see flint as anything other than a ginger whirlwind of chaos that would get all his friends killed for funsies.
dufresne 1.0 and 2.0 are essentially two different characters to me. the actor they hired to step in after the first had to leave had a completely different energy. not better, not worse. just very different in ways that make me wonder if dufresne’s trajectory would have been the same if jannes eiselen hadn’t gotten terminal cancer (RIP).but i can still see where 2.0 is coming from, i guess, up until taking his bitterness about flint out on silver.
