🎉 Today marks the 26th anniversary of Shenmue I: Yokosuka
On December 29, 1999, Shenmue I: Yokosuka was released. An action-adventure game from Sega, created by Yu Suzuki, and often regarded as one of the pioneers of open-world game design.
Set in 1986 Yokosuka, the game world felt truly alive. NPCs followed their own daily routines, the town moved with time, and systems like QTE went on to influence countless games that followed.
Shenmue was ahead of its time. That is exactly why it is still remembered as a legend — a game that proved virtual worlds can create real memories.

Caramia’s route was the first in the game that I completed, simply because I found it the most compelling when first starting the game. (Scarlet best boy tho) I don’t recommend playing the main three first, though, because of all the side plot that is explained through the other character’s routes. That’s one of the things that I like and don’t like about this game, but I’ll save that for another time.
Caramia is the brave lion with fiery orange hair and a compelling, outgoing personality to match. He outwardly states his care for the heroine several times throughout the game, but it’s hard to tell whether it’s personal or not until you complete his route. Or start it even; that’s one of the things that turned me off about his route- the pacing. It went from the neutral relationship of “I’m going to take care of you” which I found very sweet and loving, to a confession near the beginning of his route. Just a note, Scarlet’s confession was at the end of his route. This bothers me because it felt like it was going so fast. Well, whatever, I can get over it. I’m not blushing, s-stupid!
Fuka overhears Kyrie and Caramia talking about her, so she eavesdrops like the little bitch sh- AHEM. Caramia discloses that Fuka reminds him of his past lover, a plot device I’m actually quite fond of, since it allows a lot of growth for the characters. BUT IT WAS USED SO WRONGLY. The issue is never really brought to light- Caramia ignores Fuka, then pretends like nothing happened. Then she brings it up and he tells her not to worry about it because he loves her. Then they drop it. Seriously? That’s it? Nothing changed or progressed? FINE. (In all honestly this was a tip off that the writing- for his route at least- was a bit lackluster.) Anyway they make up. Then Caramia shoots her by accident. GROAN. By the way, another loose end! Who was Caramia scouting for when he shot her? Caramia loses the courage he obtained when he turned human and Hamelin appears because WHY NOT. The ending really start to split off here.
TRUE LOVE ENDING A- This is the ending where he snaps out of his whiny bitch baby thing and saaaaaves Fuka THROUGH THE POWER OF LOOOOOVE! He manages to overcome Hamelin and throw that hoe in jail. Just kidding Hamelin, love you. Then they get married! BUT THEN AT THEIR WEDDING SHIIIZA COMES IN AND RUINS THE “I DO” THE END. This ending was corny, which I can sometimes get behind. I actually quite liked it, besides the “POWER OF LOOOOVE” thing. That kind of device shows of lazy writing to me. Just my opinion though, I know a lot of people are soft for that <3 The other boys talking to Caramia before the wedding definitely plucked my strings. What did you think?
True Love Ending B- Caramia finds Fuka being dragged away by Ham lane and gets beaten up by Ham Lane. He never stops being a whiny bitch baby, instead gets coddled by Fuka for the rest of their days. This ending was disappointing to me. I get that it’s supposed to be worse?? I guess?? But I found that it really did nothing for me, I didn’t feel bad that he didn’t regain his courage and I wasn’t warmed when he asks for a huuuuug~. Kinda neutral, which is disappointing to me when I spend a lot of time and cash on otome games. However, I’m glad they didn’t hide behind some dumb reason to give his courage back like “it grew back over time :DD” It shows me they thought about what would happen after given Fuka’s choices, which i value in games like these.
What did you think of Ozmafia?
