Ian Rants About: The Weaboo Problem

This one's a bit of a personal rant/bitch for me about a problem that I've noticed the entire time I've spent at university. If any of my two followers are easily offended, they might not want to read further. 

My sensei (otherwise known as my Japanese professor) complained on Facebook because a student completely disregarded a pop quiz to ask questions about the anime club. He had no inkling about hiragana, let alone basic vocabulary. This is but one of many stories my sensei has. 

I've met quite a few people like this in my own intro classes. You know the type (I am not referring to the anime fan as a whole, but a very specific subset). They think Japan is the best country ever, though you know they've never done research beyond the narrow field of what they consider "Japanese."

But they couldn't give a rat's ass about learning the actual language. I mean, really. You're going to sit and play your Japanese game on the DS before class starts, but you can't even learn something as basic as the alphabet? 

So why do they bother? When did my ancestral language and culture become some sort of cosmetic item for white people to use to seem more worldly? It's widely seen as taboo to learn a language to earn that result but why is it so casually accepted with Japanese?

If you're not going to put in effort to learn and treat my heritage with respect, all you are doing is making an idiot of yourself and embarrassing us.
