This one will always have a special place in my heart as it was the first Japanese podcast I listened to regularly (I’ve been listening for 3 years now). I recommend this one especially for casual language. Most episodes have the JLPT level at which they are aimed written in the description. There are also different styles of episodes based on the topic and register! Transcripts are available in the description.

I really loved this one and I was sad to see the updates stop ): each episode is based around a phrase, grammar point or idiomatic expression and it’s perfect for upper intermediate and above. There is also a free transcript for every episode on Satomi’s website, which is linked in the description.

I love the range of topics in this one, from daily life and funny stories to societal issues. Mizuki also seems like a really wonderful and down to earth person, I love hearing her views on these topics! There is a transcript available for free in the link of each episode.

Very short but interesting episodes, mostly about Japanese language with some cultural topics too.

I feel like social media is full of beginner Japanese resources but advanced ones are hard to come by; it took me a while to find these from various sources, so I hope this is useful to someone!

Their JLPT lives and classes have saved my life on many occasions! When I started watching their videos they had only N3-N1 lessons taught in Japanese, but I believe they now also have N4 lessons in English. I also like their お金になるJLPT series a lot!

Riki Nihongo Dayo

JLPT N2以上の学習者向けのチャンネルです。 This channel is equivalent for above than N2 level.

Their N2 kanji playlist is the best I’ve seen on YouTube!

❁ Japanese podcast recommendations for intermediate learners (N3/N2) ❁

(Some of these may overlap with the advanced version if they’re suitable for both!)

1.

Lots of interviews/guest talks and deeper topics about life, which makes this one quite unique compared to other podcasts! I especially love Miku’s reflections and perspectives on philosophical topics (the language is still easy to understand for anyone with upper intermediate level and above).

2.

I discovered this recently through Miku’s podcast above so I haven’t listened to all of the episodes, but I would say it’s accessible for N3+ and I especially like her unique travel stories!

3.

This is probably the easiest podcast on the list, especially the earlier episodes, but I still listen to it regularly because I love Layla’s energy and kind attitude!

4.

I think everyone knows this one but it’s definitely worth the hype. My personal favourites are the history episodes and the ghost stories, but there are lots of interesting discussions about the Japanese language too.

5.

I mentioned this in the advanced post, but there are a lot of episodes also suitable for N3 and above.

I assume it’s probably pretty well known but I really like this channel for Japanese immersion! He does interviews with various people from all sorts of backgrounds, and not only are the interviews really interesting in themselves, but you can also familiarise yourself with vocabulary from lots of different areas of life (be advised that some of the topics are quite dark though, as he often interviews people with unusual life stories). You would need an advanced level to understand, but I really like that the videos also have CC on the screen.

hihi!!! do you have any resources for japanese beginners? i’ve been using busuu which has helped me a lot, esp w speaking, but i was wondering if there’s more i should be doing

for context, i have a trip to japan this summer and ik how to speak and understand some introductory stuff :)

Hello! It's almost 5 years since I started learning so I can't quite remember everything I used, but I know I relied a lot on Youtube channels for learning authentic Japanese. One of my favourites was Japanese Ammo with Misa (she has travel videos and also absolute beginner grammar, and more intermediate grammar when you get there) and also Miku Real Japanese (N5 and N4 grammar videos and very helpful verb conjugation videos).

A good textbook is also important! I used Nihongo Soumatome because it was broken into JLPT levels and that was what I was studying for, but I know among learners the Genki series seems to be favoured. A good beginner kanji book is Kanji Look and Learn (this is the book used in my university for starting to learn kanji).

I also love the app Renshuu, it's totally free for all of the important features and you can study kanji, vocabulary and grammar based on JLPT level (which is what I do) and also other levels like grades I think. It has a dictionary as well, which I use to look up words and kanji.

(For upper beginner) there is also a free app called Manabi Reader, if you go into the 'Beginners' section they have various articles you can read (I think the easiest is the 和タノC N5 one) and you can click every word to see the translation. Kanji also have furigana over them so it's a very easy to start getting into the habit of reading. Once you can read those ones you can move onto something a bit more difficult like NHK Web News Easy. You can save words and study them later too.

It takes a while to get to a level where any input is comprehensible, but I still would recommend watching Japanese videos and drama with subtitles if you don't already, so you can get used to hearing the language. Once you have an upper beginner level you could start with easy podcasts like Bite Sized Japanese, even if you don't understand everything!

I self-taught Japanese for 3 years so it was kind of trial and error for me, I tried a lot of things! I'm sure I'm forgetting some so if anyone else has some good recommendations please comment :)
