"The danger in trying to do good is that the mind comes to confuse the intent of goodness with the act of doing things well."

Something beyond the veil brushed your thoughts — a parasitic will, a whispering void, or the echo of an alien intellect. Now your mind exerts a gravity of its own, bending others through sheer presence and warping the brave into the broken.

The Best Tools and Resources for Learning Japanese at Home
Learning Japanese is an incredible journey. It opens doors to a rich culture, new opportunities, and deeper connections with the world. But let’s be honest, it can also feel a little overwhelming at first. There are countless books, apps, and videos out there, and choosing where to start is no easy task. As someone who’s been teaching Japanese for over 20 years, I’ve seen many learners struggle…

Persona IRL: Social Stats
Okay, first in this series of Persona posts, let's start with Social Stats! Social Stats made their debut in Persona 3, and have been a mainstay in modern Persona ever since. For those uninitiated with Persona, Social Stats are values raised by doing different activities outside of battle, and some optional parts of the game cannot be progressed without having a sufficiently high enough stat. The exact stats, however, differ from game to game.
Persona 3 (and its updated version FES, its port named, well, Portable, and I imagine Reload when it comes out in February) had just three Social Stats: Academics, Charm, and Courage. All three of these can, of course, be applied to irl, but just those three aren't enough to encompass most social skills.
Persona 4 (and its updated version, Golden) increased the number of Social Stats to five, while also changing the names. Courage remained the same, but Academics and Charm were replaced with Knowledge, Diligence, Understanding, and Expression. While Knowledge seems pretty self explanatory, Diligence, Understanding, and Expression sound fairly abstract, so it can be difficult to figure out how to apply them to irl.
Finally (so far), we have Persona 5 (and its expanded version, Royal). Persona 5 kept Knowledge from its immediate predecessor and brought back Charm from Persona 3 (and FES/Portable). However, it also replaced Persona 4's Courage, Diligence, Understanding, and Expression with Guts, Proficiency, and Kindness. While it might have been easier to understand if Guts was simply kept as Courage from the other Persona games, Proficiency and Kindness feel much more concrete than Diligence, Understanding, and Expression. One could even say that Expression is a sub skill of Charm, while Understanding is the same for Kindness, and Diligence for Proficiency.
As such, I feel that Persona 5 (plus Royal) have the best Social Stats for implementing IRL. Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Kindness, and Charm are all more or less easily understood (even if I personally would revert Guts back to Courage), and the game itself succinctly explains why each one is important to becoming well rounded.
"Look, Knowledge isn't enough. You need Proficiency to adapt on the fly. You also need Kindness to be accepted, and Guts to be honest and direct. Plus Charm, to draw people to you. The quality of your character says a lot about you, so it's important to better yourself every day."
So the next time you do something, be it studying for a test, going out to the movies, or playing games with friends, think about how it benefits your core Social Stats and makes you a better person. Who knows? That rank up could be right around the corner!
