When I initially came up with this post idea I was like "Ohhh yeah! That's awesome!" And now that I have the final result.... It's... Less than cool 😂 But, hey! Trial and error, right? My entire fall semester was basically online, but I managed to snag these two physical copies from the library for an anthropology class. I'm TERRIBLE with online readings. I always have to print things out if I can. To say I learned so much more about Japan's social and contemporary historical culture through these ethnographies is an understatement. And I wanted to share the list of books I read with you all because I found them to be really important for establishing a worldview. I'm not just saying that as a Japanese culture major. It helped me realize so much about how we view other cultures, and how ingrained certain social expectations are in Japan, especially. It's so wild and honestly really cool. Here's the list of books: The Chrysanthemum and the Sword by Ruth Benedict (take everything she says with a grain of salt, because a lot of it shows how easy it is to generalize and define another culture!) Office Ladies and Salaried Men by Yuko Ogasawara Intimate Encounters by Lieba Faier Staged Seduction by Akiko Takeyama Healing Labor by Gabriele Koch Working Skin by Joseph Hankins . . . #pagesfromalibrary #ethnography #japanethnography #japan #japaneseculture #japanesesociety #worldview #academicbooks #officeladiesandsalariedmen #yukoogasawara #ruthbenedict #intimateencounters #liebafaier #stagedseduction #akikotakeyama #healinglabor #gabrielekoch #workingskin #josephdhankins #academia #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bibliophiles #booksta #booksofinstagram #booknerd #bookbookbook #booksbooksandmorebooks📚 #recentlyread #recentreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CKS8H1CAiTz/?igshid=p2dp2lmqc45p
