Tonight, the Portland chapter of the AIGA presents Graffiti Fine Art, a film about the intersection of art and graffiti. Filmmaker Jared Levy will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film, and there will be a showcase of a graffiti-inspired alphabet made by Portland’s top designers and hand-letterers.
Levy’s film addresses the friction between graffiti and art, but its inclusion in Design Week and its presentation by the AIGA led me to wonder how design plays into that relationship. In anticipation of tonight’s screening, I asked Levy a few questions. Read below for his thoughts on graffiti, art, and design and the intricate economic, cultural, and visual relationships that play out in his film.
