Review: Requiem By Jamie McGuire –You Can't Handle The Dreams!
Dreaming of the dead might mean a restless night for anyone, but for Nina Grey it was a warning. Still healing from her last run-in with Hell, Nina struggles with not only her life as a Brown University student, but also as an intern at Titan Shipping, her father's company. Recurring nightmares about her father's violent death have become a nightly event, but being overwhelmed with guilt from Ryan's unexpected departure to the Armed Forces, and heart ache over Claire being across the ocean to protect him, Nina believes her sleepless nights are the least of her problems—but she's wrong. Worried about Nina's declining health, Jared must steal back Shax's book for answers. Fighting new enemies, and with the help of new friends, Jared's worst fear comes to fruition. Desperate, he is faced with a choice: Fight Hell alone, or start a war with Heaven.
I really enjoyed this book better than the first one. The characters were more developed and evolved. I found Nina’s nightmares interesting as it was a type of flashback about her father (Jack) and Jared’s father (Gabe) stealing the Nuisance de Demoniac book from Shax the Duke of Hell. It was a great arrangements of the elements included building the conventional plot. Through out the story there are certainly many twist and turns, I didn’t see coming. Somethings are answered regarding the fate of Nina and Jared, all leading up to a dramatic and action-packed showdown with Shax and the forces of Hell.
My favorite characters in the book were Claire and Bax. Claire is awesome, She was there for Ryan with her kick-ass skills and her funny and sweet dialogue. My favorite quotes from her is in my info is in the “Firebook Pin”. It pretty funny. Max is the younger brother of Jared and Claire. He was a extremely useful supporting character. Bax was amazing in his responses to rising action conflicts durning the intense battle scene at the church. His actions were very underestimated to the reader, regardless he appears has a thirteen year old. I would enjoy hang out with him. I wonder if Bax will get a taleh in the last book of the series, Eden? My least favorite character in the book was Sasha. She felt like a filler character to me. While reading I kept waiting for Sasha’s character to develop. I was expecting to create some type of conflict with Nina, in regarding to her dreams or being involve with her or working for Shax. She kind of faded into the background, I suspect she could play have a bigger role in Eden? The two characters I wanted to learned more about is the backstory of Isaac and his taleh, Donavan. Why did they decided to work for Shax? In the story Jared said he grew up with Isaac when they were kids. What happened between them?
My favorite scene was the battle that took place at the church. It really show the potential and determination of each character’s stamina. Shax, was desperate and relentless in trying to get the Demoniac book back. Isaac even put his taleh, Donavan at high risk. Nina and Jared did everything to try to protect there love ones. They both had to choosing between the lesser of two evils, protect each other, or someone they love get hurt or die. I didn't have a least favorite scene. The book was edited so well, there wasn’t a scene that dragged on. It was a pleasantly surprise. Jamie did an wonderful job on keep the story on track and well polished. One of the biggest improvement was that The story was well edited. In this first book Providence, the story seem to drag out and there were certain scenes that could have been summarized to a short summary. In Requiem there were many scenes that were summarized, making the events much more dire and real, in the readers mind. Jamie also does an out-standing job on the easy to understand dialogue, make the characters interesting and relatable to the reader. Overall, Providence is a great read that will make you want to find out the conclusion of the story. I am looking forward to reading Eden the final installment of the Providence series. The song that best describes the story, is Through Hell by We Are The Fallen.
Who was you favorite character in the story? Do you agree with the song that I have chosen? Lets us know in the comment box!
