Two Shorties, Fifteen Seconds: Oilers Magic in 1983
On December 21, 1983, the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets met at Northlands Coliseum and in true 1983-84 Oilers fashion, the goals came fast and often.
Late in the first period, Lee Fogolin was sent off for slashing at 19:06. Instead of momentum for Winnipeg, it sparked something wild.
At 19:33, Jari Kurri scored shorthanded, assisted by Wayne Gretzky. Just 15 seconds later, yes, 15, they did it again. This time Gretzky scored, with Kurri returning the favour.
Two shorthanded goals in 15 seconds.
Gretzky wasn’t done. With 19 seconds left in the game, and Dave Hunter in the box, he added another shorthanded goal into the empty net. Five points on the night for Gretzky. Four for Kurri.
All triggered by one late-period penalty.
Hockey in the 1980s was something else.
