Book Review "Release: You"
Book Review "Release: You" My review of Jasmine Farrell's "Release: You" is up. You can see it at mjaimesserrano.com
5/5
This is a passionate book filled with such raw emotion that the power flows from each page. The title “Release: You” is perfectly fitting. These pages speak directly to the injustices of our society. Not just those that we understand on a daily basis (especially in light of recent events), but more importantly to the ones we inflict on ourselves.

Meet Jasmine Farrell!
How do you describe your style of poetry and what influences your style?
My style of poetry is passionate and uneven. There are times where it flows and moments where it is so out of whack, in order to fit the feel of the poem. There is a lot of internal rhyming and free form. The experiences life hands me, my favorite performances and friends influence my style.
Where are you from? Where do you currently reside and how has that affected your artistry?
I am from Brooklyn. Surprisingly, where I reside has not affected my artistry. However, the environments I choose to be in does. For example: The college I chose or the open mics I attend now can affect my artistry.
Can you recall when you decided to become a poet?
I decided to become a poet during my Junior year in High school. The editor of my high school’s literary magazine, The Hanger, took us on a field trip to a poetry reading that featured Major Jackson.
What type of education did you receive to prepare you for performing? Is it different now that you are more experienced?
I initially majored in English during the first two years of my undergraduate career. It wasn’t until I started taking Communication classes such as Public Speaking and Story Telling that made me switch. Those two classes and many other communication classes, helped me get over myself and actually perform my poetry. It’s definitely a different game now that I’ve been performing for awhile now. I’m less restricted. I used to go by what I was taught and left myself no wiggle room to make my performances my own.
Who are your top 5 poetic influences?
My five poetic influences are Zora Neale Hurston, Nikki Giovanni, Sunni Patterson, Joshua Bennett and Alysia Harris.
What are the pitfalls and highpoints of being a poet?
The highpoints of being a poet is performing my piece and knowing that the audience can relate to my poem. It’s like “Yes, I know exactly how you feel, here’s the situation in a poetic form.” The pitfalls of being is a poet is that poetry is subjective. Therefore, some readers/ audience will initially their hearts from the message I am attempting to convey if their excepting the flow to be a certain way or searching for a poetic device to be executed.
Who is currently in your ipod?
GoldLink- Polorized and Tracy Chapman- I’m ready
Do you have any projects coming up that we should look out for?
There’s an audiobook that I will begin working on soon. Hopefully it will be complete before February 2017.
