The Poet Will Be Televised, hosted every second Wednesday of the month at Funkadelic Studios, has definitely become one of my favorite open mic’s here in the city. The venue itself is intimate enough to make you feel like you are a part of something, but big enough to hold an ample amount of talent under one roof. Tonight was no exception. Baxter Wordsworth held it down as the master of ceremony and kept the crowd entertained in between announcing the next brave soul taking the stage. What I especially like about is, unlike a lot of other open mics, The Poet offers the chance to perform with a live band or with your own instrumentals, which is great for those just starting out. All of the talent was impeccable but my favorite act was the featured band: The Bryan Durieux Project. “Amazing” is not a great enough description to describe this band! The band consists of Bryan Durieux as lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Chris Kilcullen on lead guitar, Marques Durieux on Bass, and Jordan Lee Rivera on drums. They bounce between alternative, soul, R&B, and funk. They performed several tracks from their recent project, “Living With Other Things”, which is available for streaming on Soundcloud. Great energy, great experience. The night continued with several more open mic contenders, and a brief moment was taken to wish the event organizer, Dale Novella (The Rec) a very happy birthday! The level of kinship is just another reason why I support and love this open mic. It is a place where everyone of every talent is welcomed and cheered on.
