María’s Characterization & Personality

I’d just like to say that the way I see María is a bit different from how she’s usually portrayed. I say usually because on some rare occasions I did see her sorta portrayed similar to how I see her. I don’t really see her as your average “Villain” (simply using that word for reference as I don’t really see her as a villain at all) or your average cold bitter person. I definitely think she’s embittered, traumatized and angry about her past and her life, but I think she handles and showcases it differently from someone like Rosalie or Jasper because she’s a different kind of person and no two people are the exact same, like Rosalie being upfront and angry about her past/being a vampire and Jasper being quiet and broody about his. I think someone like María, who’s also embittered by her past and also has led a violent life, and faced traumas, acts different and weird about it all too.

Like she’s very cunning and charming and people like that usually have more sides to them. I don’t see her as some quiet, evil, cold-hearted bitchy person. I see her as someone who’s a little more eccentric and energetic and childlike to mask her more violent, crazy tendencies but also because she’s so crazy she doesn’t think there’s anything “weird” about her lmao. Like she’ll say or do something and people will be looking at her like: 😳😧👀 and she’s like: 🙂😃☺️

I think she’d kinda be one of those people that are cunning but also a little devious and crazy but she’s like really nice and sweet looking on the outside and acts very carefree and eccentric but you can see something else in her eyes lol. The people that know her or are around her a lot find her interesting, but unsettling. Because even after all the horrible shit she’s been through, and how violent she can be, she’s so weirdly wild and giddy/bubbly while also having that deep seeded bitterness about her past and being violent. She’s like that one crazy person that can be violent and devious but acts like she isn’t and just tries act like the unusual things she says/does is normal lol. Like she carries the weight differently from someone like Jasper who’s quiet and Rosalie who’s more out there than Jasper but very reserved and can be cold which makes you wonder why they are the way they are and what made them like this.

I also think María would be someone who tends to act more childlike sometimes due to having to grow up so fast and facing certain traumas as a human girl in her time, due to some of her circumstances and then as a vampire with her family surrounded by war, and then alone, she probably never really got the chance to Just Be. So now that she’s a vampire, one with a certain kind of freedom, and power, authority, strength, smarts, quickness, wit, and a plethora of skills, I think she’d finally feel kind of free to do what she wants and so she’d finally be able to really have fun and be a bit more like the child that she never really got to be, and this shows sometimes. Having her be some villain who’s always angry and quiet and violent is played out, and I’m tired of it. Also kinda racist how ppl always make her a seductive/manipulative temptress too. So many people tend to keep her so one sided and like just “Black & Red” when she’s literally so colorful (again she’s Mexican, we love many lively rich colors and not just one or two dark colors) and she has such an interesting backstory and could be so multifaceted!

Like María would definitely have her moments where she’s quiet and angry and going through a lot and sorta sticks in the background but for the most part I see her as someone who’s the Life of The Party. (I mean she’s Mexícan lmao) Someone who likes to have a good time after so many Bad Times and is generally a pretty chaotic person that’s just always getting into shit lol.

With María, you wouldn’t really think of what she’s been through at first glance, and wouldn’t really see her bitterness show through because she’s usually being chaotic or cunningly playful and what not but that’s exactly how she hides it. Because she’s also very reserved and cold, like Rosalie, and sometimes broody and quiet like Jasper and it shows at times but for the most part she keeps it hidden because she doesn’t want to show that part of her a lot. She feels that it makes her vulnerable and gives people a weakness to exploit.

To notice her bitternes, resentments and how traumatized she really is, you kinda have to pay extra attention to her. You see it in the little things she says and does.

I think of the way she smiles multiple times in her short run on screen in the movies and that’s where I get this characterization from that she’s not like your average “villain” or your average bitter person who’s been through hell. She’s not angry, quiet, or broody All the time. She can get that way sometimes (usually when she’s alone) but she’s mostly like, weird and giddy and kinda bubbly but you can see her insanity show through as well and that’s why people think she’s weird... but if you really pay attention, you can see her bitterness, her anger, her trauma...

Who do you think were some of Maria's best soldiers besides of course Jasper? And now that Jasper left, what is her army like?

The only person I can think of that was one of her best soldiers is Peter. I can see him actually being a really good soldier perhaps a bit silly at times but mostly good. I mean he’d have to be if he managed to capture Jasper’s eye and if María liked him enough to keep him around and not hunt him down when he left (which.. she never really seems to do to anyone for that matter??) I mean I have a bunch of headcanons about him, her, Jasper and Charlotte, growing and having/becoming this little Found Family Thing so I guess im a little biased lol but i think after them none were as good; some probably came very close but María would always tend to measure them against Jasper and Peter and since she’s known them longer and had some form of attachment she can’t really see anyone else as above them. I also totally wanna entertain the thought of María having a really hard time admitting to herself that she might actually miss them and Peter and Charlotte showing up like “Surprise! We have a message from your old pal!” and María is hella confused on the outside but actually glad to see them inside.

I think her army may just be pretty chill now, I remember it saying that the wars have died down and now María just defends her place every now and again. So I say over that time she’s learned a few things and has kept a lot of them around and let others go if they did leave. Perhaps she’s become friendly with a few of them after spending a lot more time with them. I think she enjoys the company as well, as her need to always have someone around can be strong at times due to her possible fear of being completely alone.

What do you think Maria's full name would be and how would it change throughout her life/un-life?

I’ve written a post once before about my hc’s for María’s full name here! The post goes into detail about two full names I’ve made up for her (because Meyer never gave her one! >_>) and what a few of those names mean!

There are two names ive come up with so far so I think if you’re going with the one in which her full name starts with “Maríana” and ends with “Gonzalez”, I’d say the one small change she’d make is shortening Maríana to María, and/or perhaps going by one of her middle names “Adelita” or “Carolina” just to hide her true identity or for another reason.

If you’re going with the one in which her full name just starts with María, she most definitely will sometimes only use her middle name “Emelína”, and or perhaps just use one of her two last names “Cabrera” or “Rozales” so like she definitely rotated around with her name and perhaps over time she may slowly forget some of her middle or last names because they say human memories tend to fade over time. I see her eventually either forgetting her full name or some parts of her name, or just getting tired of rotating between her middle and/or last name and when she meets Jasper she decides to use his.

I have this headcanon that people kinda just assumed they were married and so she kinda got the idea to use his last name from there, and it benefits because it gives her another name to use. She’d sometimes joke that she has a husband who’d gone off to war and tell them the last name to see if anyone knows of him. I see Jasper also managing to get her certain things like passports, ID’s, licenses and other fake documents with his last name on it for her to use for more convenience, especially when traveling.
