Found Family AU
Me and a friend of mine were talking about how interesting the dynamic of Peter, Charlotte, Jasper and María are. Like how they were all in a war together, with María being the leader and orchestrating everything. How they spent years together before Peter and Charlotte left and then came back convincing Jasper to leave and he spent some time with them before leaving them as well. María then looked Jasper up in Calgary and he had to politely tell her to keep her distance because of whatever happened, and then some time later during the series, Peter and Charlotte visit and he asks that them that should they ever run into María again to tell her he wishes her well. They don’t disagree or anything, they say that even tho it “may not happen any time soon” if they run into her they’ll definitely pass it on.
And that’s when I came up with an AU where Peter and Charlotte actually do end up running into María… they pass along Jasper’s massage and they see how it affects her… they’d never been that close to her before but they can see her perk up and her eyes soften at the mention of Jaspers name and what he said. She thanked them for telling her (because they didn’t have to) and asks them to say the same for Jasper whenever they visit him again. María talks to them a little more and they notice something.. different with her, she seems different from how they remember her last, more open and inviting? She takes an interest in asking what their life is like and what they’ve been up to, they decide to talk to her a little more before leaving.
Having learned some new things about her they ponder if they’d like to see her again, noting that she’d said something that insinuated that she wouldn’t mind seeing them again. They do so happen to see each other again and the meeting is less awkward and wary than before. They do more catching up. Eventually, over time, after many more sparing run-ins and visits, and getting to know her better, something they never really got the chance to do, they realize they actually might like her, and vice versa, she might actually like them. They begin to form a better understanding of each other and a more friendly relationship.
Peter and Charlotte realize that Jasper wasn’t the only one who needed saving….
So they decide to see if María wouldn’t mind joining them on one of their adventures or vacations, and they become better friends… and María shows them a different side of herself. A side they’d never seen before. Like she no longer has the mask of an army leader, she’s really being herself, and she seems happy spending time with them. Then Peter & Charlotte get Jasper to visit and Jasper is shook when he sees María with them.. but he sees them all having fun.. having become friends… and it makes him so happy, the more he spends time with them the more he realizes how much happier and less tense he is with the people he’s known for such a long time.
He’s able to really be himself with them because they know him, they’ve seen him at his worst and his best, and they never really tried to change him, they all respected his decision to leave when he left, María first and then Peter and Charlotte, they all grew as people while apart and now after so much time has passed they’ve found their paths crossed again, but it’s better this time. All 4 have probably seen each other at their worst and their best. They form bonds over mutual understanding and relatability, and because they’ve come to genuinely enjoy each other’s company. María becomes lighter and happier, feeling like she’s finally found people to care about again, and they’re all happy to see her finally come out of her former dark shell and truly be the girl she is at heart.
Because I think María could use some friends and who better than the people who she went through a war with? People who managed to live long enough with her through all the mess. Because they all realize that they were victims to the system in their own way and relate to each other more than they ever thought they would.
It’s like they all belong to each other in weird way. They had the potential for a real found family thing. It’s like a slow burn, enemies-to-best friends type thing. That’s why they outlasted everyone else around them.. I think they’re meant to be a coven but they haven’t realized it yet. But they know each other and it’s sweet because they would actually choose each other. No outside forces involved. They just developed a friend relationship and chose to be with each other because they want to.
