House of the Dragon | 3x02 “Queen's Landing”
Hotd S3E2 spoilers
I need to share my thoughts on the Alicent and Wylde scene. The episode was absolutely great, but it is one of the fews things I dislike about it. I really hated it!
I have already stated that I do not care about book accuracy and that hotd is way less bad than people claim. But this? Just unnecessary and upsetting.
I'm genuinely sick of Alicent going through sexual violence left and right. Like, she had already got it from her son the same day, please! In my opinion, that kiss made sense and despite how brutal it is, I found it interesting. It actually does something for the characters, there was built-up to it (and this fandom kinda of needed a reality check on incest)
But the Wylde stuff, yuck no. Useless and poor writing choices.
I see what the intend was there. The second Aemma died, Alicent become a sexual object, the men in her life kept exploiting her and never actually took her seriously, it's a violent and mysoginstic society, and she will never be free from it. Wylde has always had something against her so I wasn't that surprised when I saw the leak (wish there was more hints of it in S2 though) . I understand. However that scene doesn't work. It could have been done differently, he could have still accused her, maybe even threatened her physically (idk like grabbing her), then Orwyle could have walked in and arrested him anyway. There was no need for sexual violence.
There is some satisfying part to it, I must admit. For the first time, we see Alicent fight back against an abuser instead of accepting it which makes slightly more bearable, and Wylde get punished (for once, a sexual offender in that story is paying, finally!) was kinda pleasing. Daemon killing him before he could finish talking feels good (Daemon, this is only episode you've had my symphathy but I'll back on your throat tomorrow).
But again, that scene was shocking and useless, it could have been done differently. I hope they leave Alicent the fuck alone after that. This also needs to be brought up later, maybe during a conversation with Rhaenyra/Mysaria/Alys.
There is also that line Alicent says to Rhaenyra about she should not be blaming her alone but also the men in their life. Sp I have some hopes Alicent will finally have her big break down about the stuff she went through.
(I need to mention this is not a safe space for y'all anti-hotd/Alicent haters/etc...)
the scene with jasper and larys shows an interesting failure of aemond's as regent. where aegon's council did not fear him enough, aemond's council fears him too much. aemond is so obsessed with being feared and respected, but he's overcorrected in trying to avoid his brother's failings. jasper withholds significant intel from aemond because he is loathe to confront him about it directly, and this has disastrous results- if aemond knew, he could have locked down the targaryen bastards in the city and prevented vermithor and silverwing's claimings. instead, he is taken completely by surprise by silverwing flying over the city after she has already been claimed. he's made better choices than aegon so far, but he's very much got his own failings still that are coming around to bite him in the ass, and majorly at that.
i lowk miss the green council + lord beesbury, they were so funny
they were all nosy (relatable)
otto was conniving and homophobic and emotionally abusive and manipulative and evil BUT you cannot say his fits weren’t fire. my lord hand had drip, your honor, we cant hold that against him
tyland beefing with a small child during the council meeting (relatable 2x)
what is the obsession with alicent being this constant victim
