Choice and focus

Maybe 50 years ago a person could have experience with every significant operating system and programming language on the market. Maybe, if they moved and changed employers enough. But then the computer world exploded. Nowadays there is simply too much software to experience it all. Even if limited to free stuff, one is forced to pick and choose.

So I'm constantly gazing through the bars at languages, APIs, and software tools that I could try. Yes a journey has value in itself, but if I stopped to sniff every New Thing beside the path, or even 10% of them, I'd never finish any project. How to decide?

Last year I tasted Scala and Python and Leiningen; they were fun, but they didn't tempt me to switch from Java and Gradle. Yesterday I got dragged into working with Objective C++ and Apple's Metal API. Today I heard about a build tool named SBT that I hadn't encountered before. No telling what tomorrow will bring.

Yes, it might be fun to tinker with FreeBSD or a LoongArch CPU or develop an iPhone app. Sure, I could learn how to create Minecraft mods or Scratch animations or Godot games. Any one of these shiny things could keep me busy for months, give me great pleasure. Perhaps some day I will.

But this is not that day. Today I have tests and documentation to write, crashes to troubleshoot, updates to install, discussions to pursue, and releases to plan.

Uncle Bob, Alan Turing and Razors.

It's been some time since I've updated the blog with my software development news. It's been a busy two months filled with Java exams, web building, work project deliverables and milestones and a sense of impending doom at the THREE 4 hour exams that I have to sit this week.

That being said, I still like to take the time to discuss some of the interesting things that I've been reading and watching lately. So in this article I will quickly discuss and link to videos across the interwebs that share some very cool ideas that I have encountered during my studies and work.

Uncle Bob's Clean Code

If you haven't heard of Uncle Bob then you need to watch his videos on Clean Code that can be found for free on YouTube. Robert Martin is a highly influential software programmer who was one of the original authors of the Agile manifesto (when it was designed for programmers before the project managers took over). He is known for promoting many different software programming principles, including the well known SOLID principle.

His lectures are fun but more importantly very important to learn.

The Halting Problem

With the development of such powerful computers you'd imagine that the pool of tasks that couldn't be completed by a program would either be small or shrinking. Well, it turns out that it has stayed relatively the same size (at least for the last 20 years). There are some algorithms, some procedures and predicates that cannot be solved by any computer, even supercomputers. One of the many problems that cannot be solved was proven so by Alan Turning. It is called the Halting Problem and it's quite interesting. The video below is a very brief introduction but sums it up nicely and skips all of the logic for those who just want the high level summary.

Razor Pages ( .Net)

I have been working as a web developer for 6 months now and during this time I've been so busy catching up with the current major project which requires very little code that we have yet to delve into any real web design. I've been dealing with small amounts of javascript here and there and designed the odd banner or two in CSS but I have mainly been working on service design and continual service improvement.

This month will see me start diving into the world of .Net from Microsoft. I've been beginning my scouring of their documentation and support sites (Microsoft actually provides good documentation that explains key concepts with very little fuss.) Below is a playlist of introductory lessons from Microsoft and a great starting place for anyone who wants to get into ASP.NET or .NET web developing.

Smalltalk and Home Computers

Many old technologies make those born late - or born in “the wrong generation“, if you have to be mean about it - ask how we ended up where we are now. Why did this great technology not succeed? Why are we not using OS/2, Lisp Machines, Connection Machines, BeBoxes, Amiga computers? Why did HyperCard fail where the World Wide Web won? Why did we end up with JavaScript instead of Tcl or Scheme in the browser?

Many of these questions have the same answers: Because of existing economics of scale, because the “ahead of its time“ technology was an expensive research prototype not suitable for mass production, because there was no market for it, because newer technology was worse and much, much cheaper.

It’s much more interesting, and much more instructive, to look at technologies that hung on for a couple of years, or technologies that were technologically superior but served no real need and were for some reason never applied to a real problem, or technologies that held on to a small user base long after the big players decided to focus on bigger markets.

But smalltalk is none of those. Smalltalk did not “catch on” when it came out, but it also did not fail. It scraped by, even as languages inspired by it like C++, Objective-C and Java grew more successful.

You may object to this view, because smalltalk clearly succeeded in popularising OOP by influencing the designs of these later languages, but smalltalk is more than just OOP: Dynamism, image-based development, interactive debugging, a “view source“ button on everything, all that did not succeed, or was independently discovered later. The idea of a GUI was adopted by the Macintosh, and in a very different form.

How come smalltalk was not successful, even after computers had become fast enough to run it?

Alan Kay made an error in judgment when predicting the future of computing. He saw computers as machines for end-users to program. This was a reasonable during the 70s and early 80s, but during the home computer era, it became clear that computers were neither appliances with a fixed range of applications and functionality, or machines for end-users to program.

IBM-compatible PCs were machines to run software on, software to create, edit, and view files, software that could also run on slightly different machines. 8-bit home computers of the 1980s often booted to a BASIC prompt, letting the user input custom code. Developing your own software was seen as the default. Smalltalk and the Commodore 64 were developed based on this expectation.

Although Commodore Business Machines did not understand that at the time, the C64 became a platform for games and application software anyway. They later released the Plus/4, which was more of an appliance with limited, fixed functionality and no compatibility with the C64, proving that they really did not understand the value of compatibility in creating a software market.

Smalltalk was not a compatible platform for software, even though it had a rather portable bytecode VM, a key ingredient in the wide portability of Infocom games to basically every type of 8-bit home computer.

Smalltalk filled the same niche that BASIC filled on home computers: A way for end users to write their software. Compared to 1980s BASIC, smalltalk-80 is a great way for end-users to write software. It just wasn’t a good way to distribute software, a good way to have different pieces of software interact with the same data, or a way to run different pieces of software written by different people, or a way to deploy code. Everything lived together in the image: Your code, your data, documents, last week’s code, software packages.

Ruby, a language modelled after smalltalk, but without the image-based persistence, GUI environment, interactive debugger, and class browser has now overtaken smalltalk in the development of commercial software.

The design of the smalltalk environment did not anticipate the development of a market for software.

Welcome to my blog. My name is Jud Hudson and I am a custom software developer from United States. I have been worked in this industry for more than 7 years and I have developed hundreds of great tools for various clients using different kind of software programming languages. I have the ability to call my self experienced developer since I have a lot of past projects using Python, Java & Ruby. As I already mentioned above, I work for some clients and most of them don’t want their projects be copied by some random people.
