Activity Trackers 🏃🏃♀️ “Every 6 hours of sitting, negates 1 hour of exercise. Sitting for extended periods of time increases the risk of death as it can be more harmful than smoking” - Dr. Armbruster of Indiana University’s School of Public Health
I attended an online webinar by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) titled: Activity Tracker: A New Tool To Promote Client Achievement led by Dr. Armbruster. Activity trackers are quite popular with fitness enthusiasts, professionals and people who keep themselves motivated to live a healthier lifestyle. It assists them in achieving their goals with regard to regular physical activity, adequate sleep and other healthy behaviors. Studies have shown that males especially like that the trackers are individual and competitive.
In 2013, there was $290 million US retail sales in activity trackers. FITBIT totaled 68% of those US sales. The new Apple Watch has state-of-the-art trackers and sells for $350. As these trackers add value to ones training and health oriented goals, you definitely pay for what you get.
I have never used an activity tracker before and wanted to gain as much information and knowledge about the different type of products before I invested into one. I also wanted to incorporate activity trackers into the training of my clients/friends. The webinar was quite informative and gave me some valuable insights on which trackers are best suited to my needs.
There are 2 types of devices to look for within the trackers:
1. Pedometer: •Portable •Step Counter •Worn on hip •Pendulum system •Only captures walking •Total number of steps
2. Accelerometer: •Portable •Found in most activity trackers •Measures movements in all directions •Measures movement, not exertion. i.e. wall sit
Here are some more interesting features within the activity trackers:
NEST - Knows when you wake up, turns on your thermostat. UP - Knows your caffeine intake. PACT - Pays you back money when you meet your goals.
