You came here for one reason, and that was to find answers for Cal.

You take a step back and let Cal ask their questions.

No cameras? You wonder how Jay managed to do that and not get in any trouble.

Jay takes a VERY long pause. You think you see a sad expression flicker across their face, even if just for a moment.

Just like Cal, you feel very confused by this new information. The simple fact that Jay even asked that, means that the reason Zine left Cal, had something to do with their family right?

But according to Cal, the only other family Zine has is a sibling who is probably long dead.

Oh no.

You can see Jay reaching for their gun again, it seems like they are going to try and take Cal away from you.

If you start a fight, not only will you get in trouble again, but you might not get the information Jay is clearly holding back. But if you or Cal don’t find a way to stop Jay, who knows what might happen.

What Should We Do Now?

Knock on the door. Politely.

Before you make any assumptions you should probably check if this is actually Jay’s house or not.

You knock as politely as you can on the wooden door.

The moment you do, a stranger holding a [Massive Shotgun] appears out of thin air, similar to how Cal’s [Shroud] spell works.

They level the gun at your group and Gestalt unsheathes their sword reflexively. 

The stranger shouts at you in a panicked, gravely voice.

The stranger has the same black and white eyes that [Graves] has. They have matted brown hair that forms mutton chops around their cheeks and their face is furrowed with wrinkles.

They are wearing a tattered red uniform with a bandolier full of bullets across their chest. They reek of alcohol and moldy garbage.

You need to find some way to resolve this or you all might get shot.

What Should We Do Now?

Ask and make sure Jay dosen't want to come with us he can keep any treasure he finds maybe we can even defeat the mayor somehow. Otherwise, we gotta get moving, let's head right and just see what's going on there before we actually leave for the castle of the mist

{[RECRUIT PARTY MEMBER]: [Jay]}

You take the time to explain the situation to Jay. You catch them up on the Mayor™’s request and the [Castle of the Mist]. Finally you ask if Jay would like to join your little team.

They decline.

That isn’t a very reassuring statement.

That statement is a little better in terms of reassurance but not by much.

You say goodbye to Jay and decide to check out what is directly to the [RIGHT] of Jay’s house.

{[GO]: [RIGHT]}

You head to the right and end up on the very edge of the second floor.

This part of the town seems to be a recent addition, based on the wall rivets and the platform dangling out in the open air.

There is a small [Cottage] with a [Water Tower] installed on the roof.

You see [Tether Eijoirn] standing by a small [Garden] of [Teal Grass] and a few large [Water Barrels]

It is nice to see your shy friend looking a bit more relaxed. The last time you saw them they were upset about something. Maybe gardening is a meditative act for Tether.

What are you three doing here? Mostly curiosity, and a little bit of friendly concern if you stop to think about it.

What Should We Do Now?

Ask Jay: Will you stay with Cal? Because if you take them back Cal will find a way back to us, their friends, and we will help them. Wouldn’t it be better to help us? Come with us even, and once we find Zine you can tell them you were taking Cal back the long way home.

{[INTERVENE]}

You don’t like the idea of Cal returning to that cold lonely cabin. They told you how sad they were, waiting day in and day out for Zine to return.

You decide to intervene.

Jay pauses, and looks at you quizzically. A sad expression slowly morphing into a bored one.

{Jay cast: [BLINK]}

In no time at all, Jay disappears before your eyes. Like a rift in space opening up, they reappear and snatch Cal into the void.

 {Jay cast: [BLINK]}

Jay and Cal vanish, and appear back on the roof. Jay is holding the shotgun up to Cal’s back, clearly using them as a hostage.

You have never seen Cal look so scared. They are breathing so fast they can’t get a solid lungful of air, and they are crying large wet tears.

They call out for help.

Gestalt looks furious, the grip on their sword so tight it looks like they are going to bend the blade in half.

Jay shouts back down at you, his voice soaked with anger.

You haven’t seen [teleportation magic] before… how could you even counter that? If Jay escapes, Cal is going to be trapped in that empty cabin forever… And if you try to get them back, Jay will simply teleport Cal inside again.

What could Jay possible want? What could you possibly say to save your friend? Your mind is wracked in terror and confusion. You don’t know what to do…

{If you do not successfully convince [Jay], you will permanently lose [Cal] as a party member.}

Ask, with a bit of concern, about the dead mayor.

Before you leave, you want to finally find out what the deal is with that dead Mayor™.

Jay lets out a long sigh before answering.

So your theory about there being multiple Mayors™ seems false. It seems like this is just a shell the Mayor™ used to live inside. 

Jay has a good idea, beating up the Mayor™ does sound like it would be a lot of fun.

I know Cal doesn't like physical affection much but give them a reassuring pat on the shoulder

You try your best to reassure Cal. They are clearly going through some stuff right now.

You know Cal is scared of physical contact so the best you can do is a gentle pat on the shoulder.

Cal doesn’t seem to hate it.

From what Cal has told you, they have been living alone with Zine their entire life. Finding out they have had more family out there this whole time must be pretty confusing. Especially since Zine told them nothing before they left.

Cal is shaking like a leaf and they are doing their best to hold back tears, it is clear that they aren’t going to feel better anytime soon.

Put your hands in the air, ask gestalt to put their sword away, and ask the stranger if they are Jay.

You try out your new conflict resolution skills, based on how Gestalt talked down that Bounty Hunter.

So this IS Jay the Gunsmith, but they are still pointing the gun directly at you. Luckily Cal steps in to help. 

The anger fades from Jay’s voice and they lower their gun and take a more relaxed stance.

It seems they have at least decided not to shoot you. That can be considered progress you guess.

Maybe you and Cal can finally get some answers.

Double check with Gestalt, making sure nothing else is being forgotten. Respect Cal's space as much as you can, too.

You decide to check in with Gestalt and see how they feel about the current situation. Gestalt looks around, weary and confused.

You remember the warning you got, that the undead patrol the castle at night. Getting across the [Silver Gorge] before the sun sets is your best strategy.

Jay chimes in with an angry retort. Their disdain for the Mayor™ and their greedy system is clear. It makes you wonder what other ‘Coin Cities’ are out there. They are probably not the best places to live.
