Rise to the Top

When you step inside a wrestling ring, you become something else. You become something greater; the world belongs to you and you’re above and beyond all levels of life. You look at that crowd; the crowd looks right back. But here, even as I stand alone in a WRP ring, mentally preparing myself for what comes my way, that feeling isn’t there.

So where’s my mind going to be in front of a live crowd?

Jay Savage prepares for a soon-to-be bout against WRP’s own Danny Harris.

“I spoke to Danny a few weeks ago. He... definitely isn’t an easy guy to reach. He does his tour thing, he does his singing, so even I have to ask myself what the hell he’s doing wrestling when he’s making a hell of a lot more just by stretching his vocals.”

Jay leaned on the door frame of the office of one of WRP’s Talent Relations members. His arms crossed over his chest, he shook his head.

“We all have dreams of doing this, even if life leads us elsewhere,” TR simplified.

“I’d rather be a fan of the business if I knew I could afford a yacht.” Jay pushed himself off the door frame, striding about the office. He was visibly irritated.

The producer placed both elbows on his desk, hand over knuckles. A look of concern crossed him. “What’s the matter, Jay?”

“I don’t like preppy little rich boys throwing money in my face,” he snapped. Hand motions pointing at his superior. “I don’t like the idea that while I’m still climbing that ladder, someone gets to skip in line because they throw money away like used up toilet paper.”

He turned away, his back to the man behind the desk. The same man, leaned against his chair. One brow raised. “No, that’s not it...” he told the new comer.

Savage looked over his shoulder.

“You’re scared.”

Then he looked away and scoffed. “Scared?”

“That’s right. Scared. You got screwed over when you reached that shining moment. When you thought you were on top of the world and now? Now you’ve got nothing but independent shows and self-promotion… and you’re scared it’s going to stay that way.”

Jay said nothing, facing the windows with hands at his hips. He was angry at the fact that the words held so much truth.

“You’re poking at Danny because you feel he’s an easy target, given the situation. I understand that... but it’s not an excuse.”

Jay looked at the TR. “What if it happens again? I lost hope once. I don’t think I can do that again.”

“You won’t.”

There was a silent moment as Jay looked outside until an idea snapped in the producer’s head.

“Let me call Danny and have him set aside some time to meet up with you. I think you’ll realize just how much you two have in common.”

Savage said nothing. Instead, he chose to relax on the couch, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Do it.”

Title: A Voice In the Dark: Get Your Gun #1 (of 5) Creator: Larime Taylor Colorist: Jay Savage Publisher: Image Comics Release Date: 09/24 Reviewed by: David Melton

Zoey Aarons was born with the compulsion to kill, yet it’s been 118 days since the last time she murdered anyone; two people, actually. The urge, however, is boiling just under the surface. Having a system that she sticks to, one that has worked every time in the past, Zoey is precise with her attacks, while doing everything she can to keep them at bay. In the present, Zoey and her kindred spirit/stalker who goes by the name of Dr. Lecter find themselves tied to chairs with a gun pointed at their faces. It just might be Zoey’s turn to answer for her wrongdoings and Lecter appears to be guilty by association. Jumping to the past, issue #1 does a great at giving you the facts that have led up to their current predicament. If you haven’t read the original series, do not fear as Larime makes sure you are on board with the story before moving forward.

Gritty, fun, dangerous, this title is a must-read for fans of Dexter, American Phsycho, or Jim Thompson’s “The Killer Inside Me”. Larime Taylor completely fleshes out this character as you feel like her reasons for killing are justified and you sympathize with her. The closer you feel to this character the more you begin to fear for her because you know what happens next, and while the tone is light throughout the story, what’s just under the surface is nothing to be feeling good about. No matter how you much you root for a character of this type, their day of answering for their past is always looming around the corner and it should be fun to see how this one plays out.

I love Jay Savage’s coloring in this issue. Muted, earth-tone colors that really bring the action and the story to the forefront by supporting the tone of the issue. Enhancing the artwork, it makes the panels look life-like as every page is a treat to look at.
