Eli Degibri and Orchestra, Tel Aviv, November 2014. The thing that most impresses me about saxophonist Eli Degibri's music and playing is its clear vision from start to finish -- an architecture. It's a quality that calls to mind artists like John Coltrane, Billy Harper and Harold Land, among others. Listening to Eli, you get a sense of riding a train and communing with the changing landscapes. Commune is an excellent word for Eli's approach. He is completely immersed in creation, communing with the abstract, the personal, as well as the visceral beauty of it. With the addition of a big band and strings, Eli's music morphs into a volatile, swinging, finely detailed tapestry. The gifted conductor Mike Holober's arrangements are perfectly balanced to Eli's writing. Expansive and breathtaking as it was, the energy of this 35-piece Orchestra remained as supple and immersive as one of Eli's small Quartets. Set in the Opera Hall of Tel Aviv's acoustically superb Performing Arts Center, this evening was the stuff of Heaven! Learn more about Eli here. See more shots from the evening here.
