Jazz Composer, Educator David Baker: RIP

David Baker was one of several great talents to emerge from the Indianapolis scene in the late ‘50s (Freddie Hubbard and Wes Montgomery were two of the others). As a trombonist, he played with a number of big bands and in the George Russell Sextet of the early ‘60s which made several classic albums for Riverdie. Jaw problems forced him to switch to cello, but his main passions were composition and teaching. He was a music professor and the director of jazz studies at Indiana University where he touched and inspired the loves a many. He died in March at the age 84. This appreciation on Facebook is from one of his students, Woody Shaw III.

Okay, so the thing with singing and playing is (I think) that the instrumental bit has to be totally mental. I mean, playing by ear goes out the window because your ear's already devoted to your singing, so you've got to have the fingering's down.

(learning this as I'm working on cello basslines, haha. When I was learning how to sing and play on bass I couldn't think about it; it just kinda developed, which totally left me in the dark when it got to applying it to other instruments.

I have this regular gig with George and Mat on Tuesdays.

Mat can't make the next restaurant gig on Tuesday, right? So George is like "sure, let's just play the two of us. You on cello; I'll bring my upright so you can play both depending on the songs"

BUT HOLY SHIT

there's a lot I don't know still. Like how to chord on cello.

So I've gotta figure out chording for all the songs I'mma prolly play on cello

As well as, you know, how to solo and swing fast 

I mean, I can play a pretty good solo at medium tempo, as well as swing

But when it gets uptempo, and it's swung shit, I resort to slow licks - either that or my playing falls all over the board, haha. Straight isn't so bad fast cos that's what I'm used to (classical training and all that, haha.)

I mean, either way I've got to learn to chord for the songs he wants me to play next Tuesday. It'll be okay, right? I can guess at which songs I'll be cello-ing, learn how to play all the chords for 'em (at least, one set of voicings, haha) and just get enough licks into my repertoire to the point where playing fast swing licks won't get my groove all over the place.

I can doozis!!

It's just gonna take practice. Lots and lots of it.
