Jonathan Byers Week :
Thursday Moodboard - California
"Who would I tell? You're my only friend, Jonathan." - argyle season 4
jonathan byers week day 5 - california era/pressure
if this were a proper painting it'd be called "sorry you havent heard from me and probably wont ever again, would it help knowing that i'm hopeless in my attempts to stop thinking about you?"
Oh you thought I was done with “Jonathan getting Vecna’d” vignettes? I’ve got more of them. In this one, Vecna (and someone just as evil, me) draws an uncomfortable parallel between Jonathan disassociating and Joyce shutting down in a prior memory. He is, in the end, his mother’s son. Is it canonical? I dunno. There were months in Lenora. Why not?
Jonathan is lying on his bed, head under the covers, in what must be his bedroom. A haze of smoke lingers in the room, but she can’t smell it. Nancy notices her picture on his side table and another of her on his corkboard. She wants to spend some time in the room, to see the space her boyfriend created without her.
How many times had Jonathan called her, asking for Nancy to come out and see Lenora. Why had she denied him? Why had she demand that he give her four years in Emerson when she couldn’t give him four days in California?
His room is similar enough to the one in Hawkins that it’s still Jonathan, yet there’s new stuff sprinkled in, too. Enough to make her uncomfortable with what she willingly missed. Nancy knows there’s more here, things she’s missing in a first glance. Revelations that would maybe provide some context to the Jonathan that came back from Lenora.
But the door opens and Will sticks his head in, groaning at the smell.
“Got a minute? There’s stuff at school, with El and I think she can use a Jonathan Byers pep talk.”
“Not now, bud,” he mumbles. “I’m tired.”
Will rolls his eyes and steps into the room. He’s feeling something that Nancy can’t place. Disappointment? Anger?
“It’s bullshit, Jonathan. We’re all missing Hawkins, but this moping over Nancy has gotta stop.”
“I’m not well, Will. I’m tired. Please just handle it, okay, bud?”
Will just stands in the doorway, a hard look on his face. “Fine,” he declares, “have it your way.” He slams the door on the way out, which causes Jonathan to groan and roll over on his side, reaching out to the empty spot on his bed.
