I got some time today so I quickly redrew Judar's hair ^^
I'm getting more used to drawing the shape of his hair
I like the clearer shapes now! My fave is the 4th one, then the 3rd one
Scrapped the 5th and 6th ones cuz they don't have very clear shapes to me.
Hand is tentative though I'll probably redraw that
I'm very amazed by how people draw silhouettes and even quickly render using the lasso tool...
I tried the lasso tool method out for making silhouettes because I was bothered that I couldn't get the shapes I wanted at first, so I quickly lasso'ed the shapes of his hair spikes and kept repeating.
This gets made even easier when you have "Add to selection" turned on on CSP (or any similar function)
Admittedly I'm MUCH better at sketching with lines (which is how I always sketch), than blocking out silhouettes with a big brush and erasing from it to make shapes.
Because the 2nd was done with lasso tool, it has some jagged edges (though Ig you could turn Anti-aliasing higher) and has some unbalanced spikes, but it actually helped me get the shapes I wanted much faster for me.
Making silhouettes with lasso tool is fun... I then put the lasso tool version on low opacity, and re-sketched over it (3rd and 4th image)
I was wondering whether to post on side or main but it'll probably get buried under my reblogs and ramble posts since I don't have a solid art tag there
And Tumblr's search function is so finnicky that some of the tags don't work when you search them, so I'll put it here

The idea I had for the 1st one was Judar clutching onto Alibaba's sleeves.
Then for the 2nd one, I thought of Judar yanking on Alibaba's rope cord accessory playfully to pull him closer to his face. Like a cat batting at rope 🐈⬛☀️
For the 1st one I did not think through how his bangs partially covers Alibaba's face...
I usually draw one chara, then draw the other.
Thankfully, I thought it through with the 2nd one ✌️
The way his hair and eyes are lined, is so nice, I love it... 🤭

Ok the auto translator seems to be working decently (enough for me to view over the TOS)
They seem to accept most yume ships, but will reject series or ships they don't like, which is fair.
This artist blacklisted requesting certain series from their list.
They reject CC and yume ship comms with a couple of their faves, which is understandable.
They say that they don't use mid-tones for dark skin for this comm due to the limited colours.
The TOS lists that no midtones/screentones will be used, even for darker skin and scars.
Not the worst thing in the world considering the limited colour palette, but I'm still kinda ??? about that... 😭

I always look over an artist's TOS and portfolio on VGen to see whether they can draw LGBT+ ships and darker skinned charas. Otherwise I don't comm them.
I usually comm on VGen and other socials (Insta, Twt), cuz I prefer working with artists who are OK with doing minor revisions.
I've ordered a bunch of Skeb style comms from VGen. These artists still allow minor detail fixes (ex. colour and detail fixes, skintone changes, etc.)
That's why I much prefer being able to put more inputs in as the client, if any colour/detail fixes are needed.

Colourism is a HUGE issue, including in EA/SEA spaces.
All the times I've seen a darker skinned chara get drawn whitewashed or with an "ashy" looking skin tone is way too many to count 💀
Changing the skintone and adjusting it to be slightly darker is such a minor fix.
Maybe I should start with KuroEne first to "test the waters" for how the comm will turn out cuz both of them are pasty/have light skin

I've seen numerous tweets from people talking about how they've received Skeb comms they were unhappy with cuz they didn't allow any changes AND whitewashed their sonas or OCs.
Honest to god, I'd permanently blacklist an artist if they ever refuse to do skin tone changes, etc., especially since all my refs clearly have my characters and faves with tanner/darker skin. I'd be so upset and annoyed.
With cell shading styles, these minor edits are quick to do, too.
With some rendered styles, some colours would need to be redone, but the artist should've followed the client's refs from the beginning.
Thankfully I've personally never run into this problem with Selena being whitewashed in a comm, and let's hope it stays that way.
All the artists on I've commed (including on VGen and other socials like Twitter and Insta) have been super kind about minor edits and revisions, including skin tone changes and detail fixes 🙏

Since it's summer I should eventually get on the grind of translating JuAli doujinshi and KuroEne's old Pixiv Logs/Twitter Fanarts 🙏
I have 15+ JuAli doujins in my hands (mostly SFW, but a few are NSFW), because I bought them from secondhand resellings
I imagined that most JuAli doujins were made during the time while the Magi anime was airing
I have at least 90% of KuroEne's fanarts saved from back then (mostly SFW, but there's some NSFW)
For KuroEne, most of them are mainly fanarts from 2012 - 2016, but there are some from 2017 - 2020+
I got into KagePro and KuroEne when I was like 12.
Kid me was a master archiver that saved most of their fan-works 🫡
Since I tend to gravitate towards niche popular ships (ex. LimGuda) and rare pairs (ex. JuAli, KuroEne, XanLena, IdaTatsu)
I was so pleasantly surprised that 2 of my biggest OTPs ever have old NSFW doujinshi like OMGGG
I'm so shocked about the existence of a few JuAliHaku (NSFW) doujinshis like I am winning ✌️ I have a few of them!

Though, ofc, I understand the gray area of translating the works of artists who are not in the fandom anymore and/or deleted their accounts.

I first got exposed to fan-doujin culture through KHR, so Ik there's tons of doujins that I would've never gotten to read if it weren't for fan-translations.
Especially since KHR had a really active doujin scene, and was most active during the mid 2000s - early 2010s. KHR was renowned for having one of the biggest doujinshi counts at the time
I have over 20+ LimGuda doujinshi (assumably 20 - 25), but LimGuda's artists are very active in the fanbase, so I won't post them publically to respect their wishes.

Ok let me explain this for people who are curious.
For example, general Japanese Twitter etiquette between fan artists is generally polite.
This is popular on Japanese SNS
When you’re not mutual follows with someone, often JP artists will send a tweet to the other person like FF外から失礼します (Efu-efu-gai kara shitsurei-shimasu, ”Please excuse/pardon me, since we’re not mutuals [but allow me to make a comment]”)
And it's also common JP artist etiquette to RT (Retweet) a person's post and then make a new tweet on your own account like:
コンビ (Konbi) = “Combination; pair; duo” (Used by artists who like seeing a combo of charas together, can be platonic or ship)

This is very common to see with EA/SEA fandoms.
Iirc Magi's EA/JP fandom has a nickname for the RBY trio (Morgiana, Aladdin, Alibaba)
But I forgot what it was 😭
It might've been the fans saying that they look like traffic lights in terms of colours? WHDHSHDSH

As for AliHaku (RyuuAli), the Alibaba and Hakuryuu duo is called by the fan-nickname 王子組 (Ouji Gumi, "Prince duo"), since they're the Two Princes and Two King Vessels.
